Weir plays on despite injury
Even with one arm, Shannon Weir is better than most players. After injuring her left elbow during the tail end of a game against Cortland Nov. 30, Weir took off from practice on Wednesday, and only practiced very little on Thursday, according to Oneonta State women’s basketball coach Dan McGraw.

Area soccer stars honored
Milford junior Brenna Campbell and Cooperstown junior Anna Kieler earned first-team honors in Class D and C, respectively, from the New York State Sportswriters and Coaches Association.

The pressure finally got to Ft. Plain Saturday night. The Cooperstown boys basketball team rode a stifling full court press and second half offensive fireworks from seniors Chris Gentile and Jason Conklin to claim a 58-49 victory over Ft. Plain in the championship game of Milford’s Anton Remy Tournament.

With a full moon beaming down and the clock ticking toward midnight, Jenny Potrikus finally put an end to the Section Three Class C final Saturday night, rifling a low shot into the right-hand corner of the goal to give Cooperstown a penalty shot victory over Manlius-Pebble Hill and set off a wild celebration.

Every time the Cooperstown football team seemed to gain some momentum against Adirondack Friday night in their Homecoming Game, something seemed to go wrong. When it was over, Adirondack had a 35-7 victory, eliminating the Redskins from postseason play.

The Cooperstown football team is nothing if not resilient
After a 35-0 loss two weeks ago, and a potentially devastating overtime loss to Mt. Markham last week, the Redskins bounced back with a dominating 20-7 victory over Little Falls on Saturday at Lambert Field.

Two of the best girls soccer teams in the state, who also happen to be just 10 miles apart, will meet on Saturday for local bragging rights. Milford, 13-0-1, and ranked fourth in the latest Class D state poll, will host Cooperstown, the defending Section Three Class C champion who are 8-3 overall and ranked 12th in Class C, at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

Hall of Fame Chairman Jane Forbes Clark called it the perfect way to start Induction Weekend. The museum unveiled a statue of Satchel Paige, possibly the biggest and best known star from the Negro Leagues, with the help of one of Paige's daughters, Linda Paige Shelby on Friday in Cooper Park.

Clark Sports Center adventure programs director Jim DiLiberto said the experience of the gym's new state-of-the-art ropes outdoor course is almost unexplainable, but the end result is not. "It's all about building team leadership and helping people help themselves," said DiLiberto, who joined the gym April 10. "It's not recreational and it's not designed just for thrill seekers. There's a definite end result people will have after participating."

After just one major league start, Chuck James has drawn comparisons to another former great Atlanta Braves lefty-Tom Glavine. After his team was dominated for eight innings by James in a 4-1 Braves win on Sunday, Devil Rays manager Joe Maddon jokingly compared the Braves' young left-hander to Glavine.

Hall finalizes Weekend plans
Although attendance at the museum is down about nine percent from this time last year, Hall of Fame official Brad Horn said there are many reasons for optimism as the all-important summer months begin.

At one time Bob Wolff was the youngest broadcaster on television, and now, at age 85, he is the longest running broadcaster in the business. In the 67 years in between, he made a name for himself as the hardest working journalist in the business as well.

CANTON-Running what head coach Don Howard described as an extremely intelligent race, Cooperstown senior Josh Edmonds placed third in the state 3,200 meter race during the New York State Championship meet at St. Lawrence University Friday night.

What a week. Not only was Cooperstown sophomore catcher Philip Pohl named the Center State Conference Division II Player of the Year over the weekend, he also found out Monday night he has earned one of 18 spots on the Empire State Games baseball squad this summer.

Capozza, a 1999 Cooperstown graduate and six-year cross country runner, is a member of the 3rd Brigade's 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) stationed just northwest of Baghdad.

Gentile to get first big test of season
Cooperstown tennis player Chris Gentile has not been challenged much on the court this season. That figures to change on Friday. Gentile, a junior, has not lost a singles match since his freshman season, and it's usually newsworthy if he drops a single game during most of his matches. But on Friday, the Redskins will host Westmoreland and child prodigy Josh Tayefeh.

17th C-town Invitational to feature quality field
The Cooperstown boys track team needs to learn a lesson about what it means to be a good host. In 10 of the 16 years the Cooperstown Invitational has been held, the Redskins have won their own event, including the last three years in a row. Based on what happened at the Sherburne Invitational on Friday, you can pretty much pencil in 11 of 17 and four straight.

Banner gets third win for red hot CCS baseball
What a bad break. After scoring 26 runs in non-league wins over Richfield Springs and Frankfort-Schuyler Monday and Tuesday, the Cooperstown baseball team hosted a doubleheader last night, and then will be off for 10 days for spring break.

Although there are different opening days for baseball, football, etc., nothing comes close to the anticipation elicited from that of April 1, trout season. However you want to put it, whether it be "true to form" or "keeping with tradition," my opening day results remained the same, a big fat zero.

Coop-Richfield football rivalry to be renewed
Football fans, mark your calendars. The Cooperstown and Richfield Springs football teams will renew their long and once heated rivalry in the season-opener for both teams next fall. Richfield will travel to Cooperstown on Saturday, Sept. 2 for a 2 p.m. non-league game to open the 2006 season.

CCS baseball armed and ready
The Cooperstown baseball team is going for the Pohl position this season. Senior captain Andrew Pohl figures to be the number one starter, while younger brother Philip, a first team All Star catcher last year as a freshman, will be his battery-mate. Philip Pohl hit .370 last season, is a very good defensive catcher, and has dedicated himself to getting better in the offseason, said Cooperstown baseball coach Frank Miosek.

CLINTON-In a classic battle of Cooperstown's size and power against West Canada Valley's speed and quickness, the latter prevailed by the slimmest of margins. Top seed West Canada Valley used a late 8-0 run and Cooperstown missed a potential game winning shot as time expired as the Lady Indians escaped with a 46-45 victory in a Section Three Class C girls semifinal at Clinton High School Saturday afternoon.

For the third straight year, the Cooperstown and Tully boys basketball teams will meet in the Section Three Class C-1 tournament. The seventh seed Redskins (9-11) travel to second seed Tully (16-4) on Friday night for a 7:30 p.m. contest. Cooperstown defeated Tully in the C-1 semifinals last year, and Tully beat Cooperstown two years ago in 1,000-point scorer Shane Connolly's final game.

As of the Town Crier's press time, the Milford boys basketball team's opponent for Saturday night's Tri-Valley Championship Game in Oneonta was still undetermined. But whether they end up playing Franklin or Gilbertsville-Mt. Upton, who met Wednesday night to decide the Tri-Valley West winner, the game plan much for Milford head coach Frank Spurchise won't change much.

SHERBURNE-Junior Josh White was the only Cooperstown wrestler to advance to the finals at the Center State Conference league meet, here, on Saturday, losing to Zachary Galligan of Adirondack, 10-3, in the 135-pound weight class final.

Leonard joins 1,000-point club
With just over a minute remaining in the first quarter of Tuesday night's game against Sauquoit, Cooperstown senior Dana Leonard joined a very exclusive club. She grabbed an offensive rebound, and was fouled while banking in a short jumper, giving her exactly 1,000 points in her career. The only other player in Cooperstown girls basketball history to score over 1,000 points was 1987 CCS graduate Dawn Berry, who holds the all-time girls record of 1,087 points.

Redskins upset bid falls short
There really wasn't a lid on Cooperstown's basket for the final four and a half minutes of their home game against West Canada Valley Saturday night, it just seemed that way.

CCS girls clinch first league title since '88 season
After squandering much of a 13-0 run to start the game by halftime, the Cooperstown girls basketball team left nothing to chance in the second half. The Lady Redskins used their superior inside game to start the second half on an 11-2 run, capped by sophomore Jen Wehner's three-point play, en route to a 49-34 victory over Sherburne-Earlville Monday night at Bursey gymnasium.

Milford boys close in on East title
MILFORD-The Milford boys basketball team all but assured themselves their first Tri-Valley division title since 2001 with an impressive, 68-58 victory over Gilbertsville-Mt. Upton Friday night. The victory, coupled with Worcester's home loss to Laurens, clinched at least a tie for the T-V East title. The Wildcats could have clinched the league with a home win over Schenevus last night. Milford and Worcester meet Friday, Jan. 27 in Milford.

3 CCS grapplers make title round
UNATEGO—Three Cooperstown wrestlers lost in the finals of their respective weight classes at the Unatego Wrestling Tournament on Saturday to help the Redskins to a fifth place finish out of nine teams competing.

Triathlete Groff `pursuing dream'
Sarah Groff was born to run...and bike...and swim. Groff, who was born in Cooperstown and set the record for the fastest swim of Otsego Lake as a 14-year-old, is currently a professional triathlete with dreams of making the 2008 Olympic team. According to her new website, sarahgroff.com, she is a self-proclaimed tomboy who participated in a number of sports growing up, finally settling on running and swimming by her teenage years.

7 suspended from CCS hoop team
For the second time in three years, several members of the Cooperstown boys basketball team have been suspended for violating the team's code of conduct policy.

Somewhere, Ken Kiser must have been smiling. The Cooperstown boys basketball team overcame a 13-point fourth quarter deficit to capture the championship of the 24th annual Cooperstown Holiday Tournament, 56-52, over IHC Watertown Thursday night.

Hall draws more than 337,000
Despite high gas prices and a renovation project that wasn't completed until April, attendance at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum was up nearly seven percent over 2004.
