2005 was a historic local sports year
From state championships to scoring records, the local 2005 sports scene had its share of historic individual and team milestones. In looking back at the 2005 issues of the Cooperstown Crier, we were struck by the number of teams and players making it to state competition this year; from wrestler Brendan Hill to the CCS cross country and girls soccer teams, it was quite a year for Cooperstown sports.

CCS wrestler White moves to 10-1 on year
Cooperstown junior Josh White won all five of his matches at the Onondaga Tiger Duals tournament on Saturday, and was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the six team tournament. White is now 10-1 on the season, his only loss coming to Frankfort-Schuyler's Frank Sanders, a 10-8 decision he lost in the final seconds. White is currently ranked third in Section III in the 135-pound weight class.
CCS girls improve to 7-1 with tough league victory
The Cooperstown girls basketball team continued their impressive start to the season Monday night, defeating Center State Conference foe Mt. Markham, 55-38, to maintain their hold on first place.

Milford boys take control in T-V East with 44-39 win
WORCESTERThe Milford boys basketball team took early control in the Tri-Valley East with a rugged, 44-39 victory over two-time defending East champ Worcester Tuesday night. The win moves Milford to 5-0 on the season, and they will head to Cherry Valley-Springfield Friday night in the final league game before Christmas break. "This was a great win for us," said Milford head coach Frank Spurchise after the game. "We had a wonderful defensive effort, and that's the only way we're going to win games."
C-town volleyball beats Canastota for first time
The Cooperstown volleyball team did more than win a Center State Conference league game Monday night, they made history. Their four set win over Canastota at Bursey gymnasium Monday night marked the first time in school history the Lady Redskins have ever beaten perennial powerhouse Canastota.

Redskins fall to Herkimer, play at Markham Friday
The Cooperstown boys basketball team matched last season's loss total with a 76-67 loss to Herkimer Friday night at Bursey gymnasium. The Redskins, 1-3, do not play again until Friday night, when they open Center State Conference Division II league play at Mt. Markham. Cooperstown finished last season 20-3.
Sisters to wrestle for Cooperstown this year
The Cooperstown wrestling team has a number of newcomers on the squad this season, including a pair of sisters, freshman Rachele and sophomore Sara Ruggiero.

Wildcats win tourney with 4th quarter rally
MILFORD- File this one under Unlikely Comebacks. Trailing Fort Plain by nine points entering the final quarter, and enduring a 20-4 Hilltoppers' run, the Milford boys basketball team found a way to make a huge fourth quarter comeback and win the championship of their annual Anton Remy Tournament Saturday night, 49-41.
Coop boys fall to 1-2 with loss to West Canada
The Cooperstown boys basketball team could not build on the momentum of a triple overtime victory on Saturday, losing 59-53 at West Canada Valley Tuesday night in a Center State Conference crossover game.

Coop girls dream season ends, 5-1
BINGHAMTON-They had to wake up sometime. The Cooperstown girls soccer team was rudely awakened from their dream season in Friday's Class C state final four contest, as Hoosick Falls scored two goals in each of two overtime periods to win, 5-1, and end Cooperstown's season at 22-1.

Cooperstown girls make Final Four
BINGHAMTONThe Cooperstown girls soccer team can start partying like it's 1999. The 22-0 Redskins advanced to the program's second ever state Final Four with a tense, 1-0 victory over Candor in a state regional contest at Binghamton High School's Alumni Stadium on Saturday.
Teamwork leads to state title for C-town runners
QUEENSBURY- Cooperstown's Josh Edmonds did not have quite enough kick left to win the state meet on Saturday, but his teammates had more than enough to lift the Cooperstown boys cross country team to its first state title since 1962 at the Class D championship race Saturday.

CCS girls soccer wins Class C crown
CORTLAND- Although it took four overtime periods to do it, the outcome of Saturday's Section Three Class C girls soccer final between Cooperstown and Herkimer was decided before the game began, according to CCS senior Dana Leonard. "We didn't come here to lose or tie, we came here to win," a delirious Leonard, draped in the Section Three championship banner, said after her Redskins earned a dramatic, 2-1 sudden-death victory at SUNY Cortland. "We decided on the bus ride over here we would find a way to win this game."

CCS girls soccer finish perfect regular season
The Cooperstown girls soccer team left nothing to chance last Thursday in Sauquoit, jumping to a 3-0 lead and hanging on for a 4-2 victory to end the regular season perfect at 18-0. The Lady Redskins also received the top seed in the Section Three Class C tournament, and after a first round bye will play the winner of the Morrisville-Eaton-Beaver River first round game at home on Thursday at 3 p.m. in a quarterfinal contest.

High scoring Milford girls seek back-to-back titles
The girls Tri-Valley Championship Game between Milford and Edmeston Saturday will be a testament to youth. Milford's Super Sophomores, Maria Arnot and Brenna Campbell, have combined for an incredible 60 goals and 36 assists, including 34 and 16 from Arnot, this season to help the Lady Wildcats to a 16-1 overall record heading to this weekend's title game, which will begin at 1 p.m. at the National Soccer Hall of Fame's Wright National Soccer Campus.

Father/son thrilled with Hall's first fantasy camp
Cooperstown's Matt Schuermann played high school baseball at Cooperstown, and college baseball at Ithaca, but the highlight of the 40-year-olds baseball career occurred Thursday during the Hall of Fame's inaugural Fantasy Camp.
Game dedicated to Kevin Belrose
Cooperstown's Homecoming football game against Sauquoit at 7 p.m. Saturday night will be dedicated to 1996 football team captain Kevin Belrose, who was killed in an ATV accident on Sept. 17.

Worcester-Milford girls meet today with T-V title on line
MILFORD-The Worcester and Milford girls soccer teams will meet here today (Thursday) for a league battle that will likely determine the Tri-Valley East winner. The defending T-V Champion Wildcats enter the game with a league record of 7-1 after Monday's 4-2 victory over Cherry Valley-Springfield, while the Wolverines own a 6-1-1 league mark.
Fisher shatters diving record
Becky Fisher is making quite a splash for the Cooperstown swim team this year. The Cooperstown junior set the school's diving record earlier this season, and on Monday night became the first Cooperstown diver ever to break the 200-point barrier during a meet.

CCS girls win key game, remain unbeaten at 11-0
The undefeated Cooperstown girls soccer team passed its first big test of the season with flying colors Tuesday, defeating two-time defending league champion Sauquoit 3-1. The victory improves the Redskins to 11-0 overall and was a big step toward winning their first league title in three years. Sauquoit has edged Cooperstown by a half game the past two seasons. The teams will meet again in Sauquoit on Thursday, Oct. 13.
C-town football faces must-win
MT. MARKHAM-The Cooperstown football team dropped to 2-2 with a 20-15 loss here on Friday night, and faces a must-win situation at Ilion this Friday night as they try and keep their league title hopes alive.

Spurchise: `I enjoyed every minute'
In the midst of his 28th season, with 300 career wins under his belt after Tuesday's 6-1 victory over Windham, Milford boys soccer coach Frank Spurchise has just one regret. "If I could do it all over again I would," Spurchise said last week. "I have so many great memories, and I've been blessed with a great family and a great place to work. If I have one regret it's that it's going to end someday. I just wish I could do it all over again."
Redskins lose in final minute
The Cooperstown football team finished off what head coach Steve Pugliese described as an extremely sloppy day with five missed tackles on a 60-yard touchdown run by Waterville's Dan Glod with less than a minute remaining, giving the Indians a 21-17 non-league victory.

Redskins take control late, 24-8
There's a reason they call him "Mr. Everything." Cooperstown senior Chris Bush threw one touchdown pass, ran for another, kicked a 39-yard field goal, intercepted a pass, led the team in tackles and kicked three extra points as the Redskins improved to 2-0 on the season with a 24-8 victory over Herkimer Saturday afternoon at Lambert Field.

Redskins open season on road Friday at U-ND

With seven key seniors lost to graduation from last year's 5-3 team, including star running back Brendan Hill, and a new offensive system with several new players in key positions, CCS head coach Steve Pugliese has had his hands full preparing for the opener.

Milford boys soccer have great expectations
MILFORD-Last year, the Milford boys soccer team surprised even their own coach with a 13-5 record and an appearance in the Tri-Valley Championship Game, where they lost to defending state champion Edmeston. This year, there will be no surprises, as head coach Frank Spurchise has "lofty goals" for his 2005 squad.
Third lake swim fundraiser nets $1,500; Garcia shines
Before attempting a swim of Otsego Lake for the second straight year on Saturday morning, Cooperstown senior Melanie Garcia said she wasn't sure if she was in shape enough for the challenge. But four hours and seven minutes later Garcia not only completed the swim, but missed the all-time record held by Sarah Groff by just 13 minutes.

Trio of local soccer stars will play at Delhi Tech
The Delhi men's soccer team will have a distinctly local feel when the season begins Sept. 4. Edmeston's Brad Belden, Cherry Valley-Springfield's Jon Ackerman and Cooperstown's Jim Dangl will all play for the team this fall.

Team's trip gets unexpected boost
Chalk one up for small talk. Bill Fort, Cooperstown's pony league manager, is planning to take members of the team to a major league baseball game in Cleveland on Aug. 20, and incredibly just happened to meet Paul Dolan, the president of the Indians, at Doubleday Field during his team's final game of the season last month.
Club in dire need of more volunteers
The Cooperstown Soccer Club is facing a potential crisis. Without more volunteers, the club may not be able to continue past the upcoming fall season, said outgoing president John Rowley, whose term expires at the end of the year.

Sandberg says modern players need to respect the game more
Ryne Sandberg just wants a little respect. Not for himself, but for the game of baseball. Sandberg used his Hall of Fame induction speech Sunday to talk about the way the game should be played, namely putting team goals over individual statistics. Former Cubs star Sandberg and third baseman Wade Boggs were the 259th and 260th players to join baseball's immortals, and did so in front of an estimated crowd of 28,000, mostly vocal Cubs' fans, at the Clark Sports Center.

Former National Football League running back Roger Craig had a memorable first trip to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Not only was it on Hall of Fame Weekend, but he came to Cooperstown to see his friend Ryne Sandberg be inducted with Wade Boggs into baseball's most elite fraternity.

Man swims lake again
For the third consecutive year, Dennis Hannon of Arizona successfully completed the nine swim across the length of Otsego Lake last Wednesday. And Hannon, 61, seems to be getting better with age, recording his fastest time this year of four hours and 43 minutes on July 20, which was seven minutes faster than last year's time.

Future Hall of Fame Weekends will be held over the final Sunday of each July, beginning in 2006, signaling the first-time in the 66-year history of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum that dates for the annual Induction Ceremony have been set years in advance.

Local man runs 100-mile marathon
Jon Sovocool describes himself as a person who likes to push his limits. And the 49-year-old from Richfield Springs did just that last weekend, running a 100-mile Ultra Marathon in Vermont; a race he began at 4 a.m. on Saturday morning and did not finish until 22 hours and 11 minutes later-at 2:11 a.m. on Sunday. The marathon, named the Vermont 100 Endurance Run, includes 1,500 feet of elevation on mountain trails that Sovocool said at times was more like climbing than running.

Hall honors `perfect' Little Leaguer
A somewhat overwhelmed Katie Brownell, 11, was welcomed into the rarefied air of the Hall of Fame last Thursday when she donated the jersey from her perfect game May 14when she struck out all 18 batters she faced.

Dubben makes state first team
Cherry Valley-Springfield pitcher/shortstop Scott Dubben was named to the New York State Class D first team by the New York State Sportswriters Assoociation earlier this week. Dubben is joined on the Class D first team by Edmeston junior Ryan Laymon, who was named the Class D Player of the Year after helping lead the Panthers to their first state baseball title this spring.
Hill opts for football at Cortland
Cooperstown's Brendan Hill had several options for his college athletic career, but in the end he followed his heart and decided to play football at SUNY Cortland in the fall.

Cone highlights Hospice tourney
Despite winning five World Series rings, recording two 20 win seasons, pitching a perfect game and receiving a Cy Young award during his 17-year career, former New York Mets and New York Yankees pitcher David Cone considers it an honor just to be asked about his chances of making the Hall of Fame someday.
Brodersen wins Ainslie Award
This year's Beanie Ainslie Award winner is known as much for his skills on the baseball field as his demeanor off it. Twelve-year-old Greg Brodersen is a three-time Major League All Star and one of the most talented players in Cooperstown Little League, but that pales in comparison with his positive attitude, said David Pearlman, his regular season coach.

C-town honors athletic teams
Cooperstown High School's 46th annual All Sports banquet Friday night was a testament to the school's strong athletic teams, both on the field of play and in the classroom. Fifteen of the 18 sports teams earned scholar/athlete team status; 69 scholar/athletes were recognized; and, of course, the stars on the field of play were highlighted as well. Like senior soccer player Michelle Valentine, who will graduate as the girls all-time leading scorer with 87 career goals; and fellow senior Brendan Hill, who not only is Cooperstown's all-time leading rusher in football with 3,807 yards and 45 touchdowns, but also finished second in the state wrestling tournament two years in a row.
Cardinals capture CYB crown
The 2005 Cooperstown Youth Baseball Major League season concluded with three hard fought games played this past week. With the season behind them and summer vacation ahead, the players enjoyed a season ending picnic at Beanie Ainslie Field on Wednesday, June 22nd.

Trio of locals recall first induction
Predictably, Babe Ruth was the biggest attraction at the first Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in 1939. At least that's what three witnesses to the historic event-Homer Osterhoudt, Howard Talbot and Catherine Walker-said during a program to help celebrate the museum's 66th birthday on Sunday.

Weir takes fourth again at states
SYRACUSE-The storybook ending was there for Shannon Weir to write, but for one of the few times in her amazing athletic career, Weir came up a little short. Six inches to be exact. Milford senior Weir, competing in Division II of the shot put competition at the state meet held at Cicero-North Syracuse High School last Friday, finished fourth in the state for the second straight year.

Shannon Weir going back for seconds
SYRACUSE-They say you never get a second chance to make a first impression, but Milford's Shannon Weir will get a second chance to make a lasting impression this Friday. Weir will return to the state track meet at Cicero-North Syracuse for the second straight year on Friday. After finishing fourth in the state in the shot put a year ago, she has a realistic shot at a state championship this year.
Panthers knock out CV-S; play in state semifinal Sat.
If it weren't for Edmeston, the Cherry Valley-Springfield baseball team may have been sectional champions this year. For the third time this season, the Panthers defeated the Patriots, this time by a 7-0 score in the Section Four Class D semifinal game in Edmeston last Thursday. The loss ends CV-S's season with a 15-6 record.

Boston's glee party travels to Cooperstown for Game
The Cooperstown community got indoctrinated on the traveling circus that is the Boston Red Sox on Monday. Everywhere the team goes, their fans are sure to follow, and this year's Hall of Fame Game was no different. Boston lost to the Detroit Tigers, 6-4, in the 59th annual Hall of Fame Game at Doubleday Field on Monday afternoon in front of a crowd of 10,000 mostly rabid Red Sox fans.

Panthers win T-V title, hand Dubben first loss
ONEONTACoach Ron Tasior's Edmeston Panthers (19-0), walked, ran, and stole their way to a third consecutive Tri-Valley League championship last Monday with a 4-0 win over arch-rival Cherry Valley-Springfield Patriots (13-5). The game was billed by pre-game pundits as a pitching duel between the league's top hurlers.

The Cooperstown boys track team is going to get a reputation as rude hosts. As expected, the Cooperstown boys track team cruised to the tournament title of the 16th annual Cooperstown Invitational on Saturday, their third straight and 10th overall championship. "I was happy that we won, but it was the way that we won and the kind of performances we got that was really gratifying," said Cooperstown boys coach Don Howard. "We had perfect weather, and a big crowd, everything went really, really well."

Boggs overwhelmed by orientation tour of Hall
Wade Boggs was reduced to declarations such as "Incredible," "Goosebumps" and "Unbelievable" when touring the Hall of Fame Tuesday morning. The 2005 Hall of Fame inductee and baseball history buff said he was too much in shock to say much more. "The goose bumps were remarkable," said Boggs, one of 25 members of the 3,000-hit club. "Walking down the hall in the wall of plaques, and to later hold Babe Ruth's and Lou Gehrig's glove, it was just overwhelming."

Sandberg lets his play do the talking for him
If there was a Hall of Fame for humble ballplayers, Ryne Sandberg probably would be the first one inducted. Sandberg, who was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame in his third year of eligibility last January, exhibited the same quiet personality that endeared him to a generation of Cubs fans during his orientation visit to the Hall of Fame on Tuesday morning.

The winds of change are blowing through the Cooperstown golf team this year. Not only do they have a new coach, Dave Peplinski, but for the first time in a long time are without a star player as well.

Area runners complete 109th Boston Marathon
An area runner and a Cooperstown graduate were two of the more than 16,000 runners to cross the finish line during last Monday's 109th running of the Boston Marathon. Milford's Nancy Mitchell completed her first Boston Marathon, completing the race in just over five hours. Also, 1987 Cooperstown graduate Jennifer (Heitz) Ross completed the 26.2 mile run in four hours, 24 minutes and 26 seconds. She finished 11,834th overall.

Youngsters lead Redskins to four straight victories
After just four games of the 2005 season, the Cooperstown baseball team has reached its win total of a year ago. Sunday's 8-6 non-league victory over Bishop Ludden at Doubleday Field gave the Redskins a perfect 4-0 start to the season after a 4-13 campaign a year ago. "We're getting the combination of good pitching, timely hitting and good defense we need to be successful," said Cooperstown baseball coach Frank Miosek.

Young CCS girls team has talent to contend
Despite having an extremely young and unproven team, Cooperstown girls track coach Connie Herzig is expecting a successful season in 2005. And that's not just because she hates the word rebuilding either. "We have a young team, but we're enthusiastic and I like what I'm seeing," Herzig said. "We have strong sophomores and good freshmen, I'm optimistic." But Herzig's early season challenge will be to find the right events for all of her young runners.

Hall plans rededication, raises admission prices
A formal grand re-dedication ceremony for the newly-redesigned National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum will take place on Friday, July 29, the opening day of Hall of Fame Weekend 2005. All physical renovation changes to the Cooperstown Museum have formally concluded. Old exhibits have been relocated to new spaces, several new exhibits have been added, and two additional new exhibits are slated to open in the next two months.
CCS baseball will seek consistency this season
After suffering through a 4-13 record a year ago, and losing three top pitchers to graduation, the Cooperstown baseball team will likely be in a rebuilding mode this season.

Michelle Valentine's heart belongs to Nazareth College
During her high school career, Michelle Valentine made a case for herself as the best girl's soccer player in Cooperstown history. After accumulating school records in both career (87) and single season (35) goals, the CCS senior has committed to Division III powerhouse Nazareth College, where she will continue her soccer career next fall.

Shannon Weir chooses O-State
MILFORD-If Shannon Weir were a presidential candidate, her supporters would be chanting "four more years!"
After spending six brilliant years on the Milford girls basketball team, where she accumulated school records with over 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds, Weir will take her act about 15 miles down the road next season, where she will play for the Oneonta State women's basketball team.
North Carolina will win NCAA Tournament
It's that time again, what I like to refer to as the most wonderful time of the year, and others refer to as March Madness. My own personal March Madness means taking a couple of vacation days and watching basketball from noon to midnight on Thursday and Friday, and continuing for the next three weekends.

Brendan Hill finishes second in state again
Now Brendan Hill knows how the other 39 felt. After not really being challenged by his first 39 opponents of the season, senior wrestler Hill finally met his match, again, in the 215-pound state final Saturday night against Matt Mazjag at Albany's Pepsi Arena.
`Spaceman' touches down at Hall of Fame
William Francis Lee, known to baseball fans as Bill "Spaceman" Lee, was at the Hall of Fame last Saturday to sign copies of his three books and impart the wisdom that seems to spill out of a fertile and restless brain like water over a dam's spillway.

Brendan Hill gets second shot to be state wrestling champion
The similarities are eerie. Seven years ago, Cooperstown's Patrick "Packy" Burke earned a state wrestling title and completed an undefeated season, a year after losing in the state finals. This year, Cooperstown senior Brendan Hill earned a second shot at winning a state title by winning the 215-pound weight class at the Section Three Championships Saturday at Oswego State. Like Burke, Hill lost in the semifinals as a junior, and, like Burke, who finished with a perfect 41-0 record in 1998, Hill is still perfect this season at 36-0.
Veterans Committee elects no one
Once again, the Veterans Committee has thrown a shutout. None of the 25 candidates eligible for election to the National Baseball Hall of Fame by the Committee on Baseball Veterans were named on the required 75 percent of ballots cast, the Hall of Fame announced Wednesday afternoon.

Redskins win C-1 title
ROME-What a night. The Cooperstown boys basketball team ended Herkimer's 14-game winning streak, avenged an earlier season loss to the Magicians, and won their second Section Three Class C-1 title in two years with a 63-62 victory over Herkimer last night at Rome Free Academy.

Milford girls win title; play G-MU in quarterfinals
MILFORDShannon Weir is finding out the hard way she's a marked player. Milford's high scoring senior was battered and bruised for a second straight game, but regrouped to score all of her 15 points in the second half as the Lady Wildcats took a 45-26 victory over Morris Tuesday night in a Section Four Class D opening round game.

For one half of basketball, the Cooperstown boys basketball team looked nothing like a number one seeded, 17-3 team. Then came the second half.

Redskins win thriller, earn top sectional seed
SAUQUOITIn a game for the ages, the Cooperstown boys basketball team simply refused to lose. At times, they refused to win as well. The Redskins blew leads at the end of regulation, and first and second overtimes, but Eddie Bauer's off-balance jumper as time expired in the second O.T. found the bottom of the net, gave CCS a 72-70 victory, and set off a wild Cooperstown celebration.
Milford-G-MU girls will renew rivalry Saturday
After a brief hiatus, the Milford and Gilbertsville-Mt. Upton girl's basketball teams will meet once again in the Tri-Valley Championship Game Saturday night in what has become almost a yearly tradition.

S. Weir hits historic point mark in style
It's hard to imagine a better scenario for Milford senior Shannon Weir to get the 2,000th point of her career. Playing at home, against her school's biggest rival, in the fourth quarter of an impressive 62-36 victory made for a memorable night for Weir and Milford fans.

Hill gets milestone win, still number one in state
VERNON - Cooperstown sen-ior wrestler Brendan Hill entered Saturday's tournament at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School with 99 career wins. It didn't take him long to record his 100th. Hill pinned Gary Foster of Dolgeville in 43 seconds in his first match at 215-pounds to become just the fourth wrestler in Cooperstown wrestling history to record 100 wins. Hill, ranked first in the state at 215-pounds, went on to win two more bouts, both also by pin, to win the weight class and move to 23-0 on the season.
Milford girls can clinch East title Friday with win
MILF0RDIt took a while for the Milford girls basketball team to shake off the sluggishness of playing just their second game in two weeks, but when they finally did Tuesday's game with Tri-Valley rival Cherry Valley-Springfield turned into a rout.

CCS boys continue to roll, 70-42
In the fourth quarter of Cooperstown's unexpectedly easy, 70-42 victory over Waterville Tuesday night at Bursey gym, CCS's vocal student body began chanting "You can't stop them." It was meant as a taunt to Waterville, but they may as well have been talking to the entire Center State Conference. With the victory, the Redskins improved to 13-2 overall and remained unbeaten at 7-0 in the CSC with just three league games remaining.

UNATEGO- Cooperstown senior wrestler Brendan Hill didn't get the match he was looking for, but he did extend his unbeaten season with four victories while winning the 215-pound weight class at the Unatego Tournament on Saturday.

CV-S boys, girls still have T-V division title hopes
It's gut check time for the Cherry Valley-Springfield boys basketball team. After beginning the season with four straight league wins, the Patriots lost back-to-back games to Tri-Valley powers Worcester and Laurens and need a win Friday night at Franklin to stay in the T-V East race. East leading Worcester plays at West leading Laurens Friday night, and CV-S is hoping for a Laurens victory.

Redskins' nine game winning streak ends
Remember Tez Thomas, basketball fans, you're likely to see him playing on ESPN someday. The Onondaga senior point guard took over last Wednesday's Cooperstown Holiday tournament final against the host Redskins in the closing minutes, scoring 10 of his game-high 30 points in the final three minutes to lead the Tigers to a 65-56 victory over the Redskins.

CHERRY VALLEYThe showdown lived up to its billing, but in the end the Worcester boys basketball team was simply too big for Cherry Valley-Springfield in their Tri-Valley battle Tuesday night.
