Cooperstown boys win 9th straight
The Cooperstown boys basketball team managed to defeat a pesky Dolgeville squad in the first round of their tournament Tuesday night, setting up a showdown with Section Three power Onondaga last night in the championship game. Onondaga's only losses this season have been to Faith-Heritage, the number one ranked team in Class C, and defending Class C state champion Tully.

Only Boggs will earn Hall election
With January approaching, it's time for my 24th annual Baseball Hall of Fame election forecast. Over the years, my prognostications have appeared in such publications as USA Today Baseball Weekly, Sporting News, Baseball Digest, and Sports Collector's Digest.

Cooperstown girls fall despite Fox's 25 points
Tuesday night's girls basketball game between Canastota and Cooperstown came down to a battle of the Redskins' inside game against the Raiders' outside game. But it was one of Canastota's rare inside baskets, with 20 seconds remaining, that proved to be the difference in their 44-43 victory over Cooperstown at Bursey gymnasium.

CCS boys host Sauquoit tonight
The Cooperstown boys basketball team won its fifth straight game with a 66-54 victory over previously unbeaten Waterville Monday night, and host defending Center State division champion Sauquoit tonight at 7:30 p.m.

Dave Bertram's basketball teams have always played tough defense, but rarely better than Monday night. The Cooperstown boys basketball team used their home opener to unveil a new suffocating defense to the home crowd and make a statement in the Center State Conference.

State finalist Hill leads CCS wrestlers into season
After struggling for a few years with low numbers, the Cooperstown wrestling team has 21 grapplers on this year's squad, including Brendan Hill, who finished second in the state at 215 pounds a season ago. The Redskins began the season Monday with a non-league home match against Section Four power Unatego, with the Spartans winning 65-6.

Boggs heads 2005 ballot
Wade Boggs, who played for both the Red Sox and the Yankees during a 3,000-hit career, leads the 2005 Hall of Fame ballot released earlier this week.

Milford boys get off to fast start with 68-49 win
MILFORD—Kyle Hogan was the hero as the Milford boys basketball team had a stellar debut to the season Monday night, getting 25 points from the junior guard on the way to a 68-49 victory. The Wildcats will hope for a similar result when they host the annual Anton Remy Tournament this Friday and Saturday.

Ichiro pays visit to Hall of Fame
Major League baseball's all-time single season hits leader, Ichiro Suzuki, was in Cooperstown on Friday visiting the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.

Shannon Weir ready to make up for lost time
Milford's Shannon Weir is back for her sixth and final season for the Milford girls basketball team-and she's on a mission. The senior is already the school's all-time leading scorer, has led her team to three Tri-Valley Championship titles, and will likely break the 2,000-career point mark this season. But after missing much of last season with a dislocated and broken ankle, she is determined to make her senior season memorable.

Spencer presented with annual Fetterman Award
An emotional Ted Spencer was officially presented with the annual Patrick C. Fetterman Award on Tuesday during a luncheon at the Otesaga Hotel. The award is given annually to a member of the community who is dedicated to serving local youth, especially in the area of athletics. Since 1991, Spencer, currently a vice president and head curator at the Hall of Fame, has been making a video of senior athletes, set to music, which is played at the Cooperstown sports banquet at the end of the season.

Richfield soccer wins title in fifth year of existence
RICHFIELD—Before this year's soccer season began, Richfield Springs boys soccer coach Jerry Manning met with his players and told them he'd like to improve on the team's 2003 performance, which included the team's first ever sectional appearance.

Polus, Scrafford run for state meet
The Cooperstown cross country team will look to send a boys runner to the state meet for the sixth straight year at the Section 3 Championships and State Qualifier Meet on Saturday, Nov. 6 at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Central School. Cooperstown senior Matt Polus is likely to qualify for the state meet for the second straight year. Polus is currently ranked third in Class C, and CCS cross country coach Jessie Ravage said unless something "goes really wrong" he will be heading back to states this year.

Spencer wins Fetterman Award
It's been quite a couple of weeks for Cooperstown's Ted Spencer. First, he found out he was this year's recipient of the annual Patrick C. Fetterman Award, and then his beloved Boston Red Sox won the World Series.

Milford boys get their wish; a rematch with Laurens Fri.
Ever since Laurens defeated the Milford boys soccer team, 1-0, in the second game of the season, the Wildcats have been hoping for a rematch. Friday they will get their wish. Milford, 13-3-2, will head to Laurens for a 3:30 p.m. contest in a Section Four Class D quarterfinal game. The Wildcats crushed Worcester, 5-0 on Tuesday, while Laurens slipped past Cherry Valley-Springfield, 1-0, in their opening round game.

CCS girls soccer earns third shot at Sauquoit
Michelle Valentine's golden right foot was a little rusty Tuesday, but still good enough to score two goals and give the Cooperstown girls soccer team a chance for Round 3 with arch rival Sauquoit.

Milford girls soccer young, but restless for a T-V title
The girls Tri-Valley Championship Game between Milford and Edmeston on Saturday will be a testament to youth. Both teams rely heavily on underclassmen for their success, especially the Lady Wildcats, who start six freshmen, including leading scorer Maria Arnot. The game will be played at 3 p.m. at the Wright National Soccer Campus, immediately following the boys T-V title game pitting Milford against either Edmeston or Laurens.

HERKIMER-Despite a Hurculean effort from senior running back Brendan Hill, poor tackling and turnovers cost the Cooperstown football team any shot at qualifying for playoffs as they lost their regular season finale, 31-14, to undefeated Herkimer Friday night.

After missing a chance to play for the league title and secure a postseason berth with a 33-26 home loss to Mt. Markham Saturday afternoon, the Cooperstown football team now faces the daunting task of playing undefeated Herkimer in the regular season finale on Friday night with their postseason hopes on the line.

It probably didn't come the way she would want it, in a loss, but high scoring Cooperstown senior Michelle Valentine broke the school's all-time career record for goals with her 81st in a 5-3 loss to Herkimer on Tuesday.

CCS football continues hot streak with 43-6 win
Like the storm that delayed the start of Saturday night's Homecoming Game for about 40 minutes, the Cooperstown football team blew through Center State Conference foe Ilion with menacing intentions, opening up a 36-6 halftime lead and cruising to a 43-6 victory.

Michelle Valentine wants to be a lawyer someday, but right now she's all about history. The Cooperstown senior continued her assault on the girls' soccer school record books this week, tying Carrie Folts' career record of 80 goals with two against Oriskany on Monday. She is also four league goals away from breaking Folts' single season scoring mark of 29, with six league games remaining.

The Cooperstown football team left nothing to chance in winning their first football game of the season Saturday. The Redskins outplayed visiting Utica-Notre Dame in every facet of the game, opening up a 20-0 halftime lead and cruising to a 28-6 victory at Lambert Field. The win improves Cooperstown's record to 1-1 on the season heading to next Saturday's non-league home contest against Richfield Springs, which will revive a once fierce football rivalry between the schools.

ONEONTA—It seems either Jay Jones is a real fast learner or Milford boys soccer head coach Frank Spurchise is a real good teacher. Jones, a junior forward playing in not only his first varsity game but his first organized soccer game ever, scored the lone goal late in the second half of the Wildcats' 1-0, season-opening victory over Margaretville at the Wright National Soccer Campus Tuesday morning.

During the last few seasons, the Cooperstown football team could win games by simply overpowering the opposition with big linemen and tough running backs. Former baseball player shares Tourette's battle
Beset with tics and shakes as a child which were shrugged off as hyperactivity, Jim Eisenreich constantly dreamed of being "normal." Thankfully for himself and others suffering from Tourette's Syndrome, a nervous disorder that causes involuntary physical and verbal tics, he turned out to be anything but normal, forging an extraordinary major league baseball career and perhaps more importantly, starting the Jim Eisenreich Foundation, which raises awareness of Tourette's nationwide.

Otsego Lake saw not one, but four separate swimmers cross the length of the lake to raise money for charity on Saturday afternoon, including organizer Beth Kerr, a 1983 Cooperstown graduate, and three Cooperstown High School students-Brian McCann, Melanie Garcia and Ben Karl.

Geertgens keeps coming up gold
BINGHAMTON-Doug Geertgens is enjoying his golden years-literally. The 61-year-old former Cooperstown Elementary School principal won five more gold medals at the Empire State Games at Binghamton University last weekend, setting age group Games records in the 300 meter hurdles and 100 meter hurdles in the process.

Hall of Fame attendance down about three percent
The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum had its best one day attendance total in three years last Tuesday, but overall attendance for the year is still down just over three percent from last year, according to Hall of Fame spokesperson Jeff Idelson.

Area athletes compete in 27th annual Boilermaker
The 27th annual Boilermaker road race, the largest 15k race in the United States, was held on Sunday, with many area athletes competing. Kane Seamon of Richfield Springs finished 242nd overall with a time of 58 minutes and two seconds, followed closely by Cooperstown's Evan Guiney, who finished 259th overall with a time of 58:02 and Evan's younger brother Allan Guiney, who finished 260th with a time of 58:35.

CCS-Richfield football to renew rivalry Sept. 18
Local football fans might want to circle Sept. 18 on their calendars. That's the date the Cooperstown and Richfield Springs football teams will renew a once fierce rivalry that has been dormant for six years.

CCS hands out athletic awards
The Cooperstown Sports Booster Club hosted its 45th annual All Sports Banquet in the auditorium at CCS last Friday night, honoring athletes for another successful season on and off the field of play. Athletic highlights of the 2003-04 season included tennis players and doubles partners Reid Snyder and Finn Dusenbery making a second straight trip to the tennis state championship tournament at Flushing Meadows, and fellow senior Nick Feinberg making a return trip to the state golf tournament at Cornell.

The Race Investigation Oneonta Adult Summer Soccer league began play on Monday, June 14. A total of twenty-one teams (11 in the men's and 10 in the women's) and over 300 adults ranging from 17 to 45 will participate.

Smoltz wants to start
It's easy to look at Atlanta Braves' pitcher John Smoltz and draw comparisons to 2004 National Baseball Hall of Fame inductee Dennis Eckersley. Both were dominant starting pitchers who later in their careers were moved to the closer's role, and both excelled at it. Eckersley accumulated 190 wins and 390 saves. Smoltz has 163 wins and, in just his third season as a full-time closer, has already amassed 120 saves.

C-town doubles team headed back to states
SYRACUSE—A friendly warning: Don't make Reid Snyder angry. Snyder, a senior at Cooperstown, was called for a foot fault while serving during the first set of the Section Three tennis doubles final on Tuesday afternoon. He ended up losing his service game, but played like a man possessed the rest of the match as he and his partner, Finn Dusenbery, cruised to their second straight inter class title, 6-4, 6-0, over the Class A team of Max Stevenson and Jason Kerznowski from East Syracuse-Minoa.

Weir inches her way to state meet in shot put
BINGHAMTON-Sports are often referred to as games of inches, and that old axiom rang true again at last Thursday's Section Four State Qualifier at Binghamton's Alumni Stadium.

CV-S baseball team falls victim to upset bug, 8-6
CHERRY VALLEY-If a classic can include misplays and base running blunders, Tuesday's Section Four Class D quarterfinal game between Schenevus and Cherry Valley-Springfield was it. In a game each team refused to lose, but at times didn't know how to win, the Dragons finally prevailed, 8-6, in 11 tense innings.

Weir, Guiney shine at sectionals
Cooperstown's Nick Weir won two events at the Section Three Class C-1 tournament on Friday, and, along with teammate Allan Guiney, has an outside shot at making the state tournament at the state open qualifier Friday in Cicero-North Syracuse.

CCS tennis still unbeaten
The Cooperstown tennis team continued their dominance of the Center State Conference East division last weekend, winning four of five league titles at the league championship match in Ilion Saturday. Finn Dusenbery won at first singles, Reid Snyder at second singles, Chris Gentile at third singles and Maggie Kuch and Eric Moglia at first doubles.

Cooperstown boys win second straight title
The Cooperstown boys track and field team's six first place finishes might get most of the attention, but head coach Don Howard points to the fourth, fifth and six place finishes his team accumulated as just as key to his team's second straight Cooperstown Invitational championship Saturday afternoon. The Redskins, in front of a large crowd and a warm, humid day at Lambert Field, amassed 122 points to take first, Oneonta 116 in finishing second, and Sidney 112 to take third in the 14-team field.

New bike club forming
A couple of years ago, Marc Kingsley decided he needed to get in shape again. Since his wife, Sherrie, was an active cyclist, he decided that was the route he would go as well. Fast forward to the present and Kingsley is 25-30 pounds lighter, and he and his wife, with the help of other area residents, are now planning to start the Susquehanna Cycling Club next month. "The club is going to be for anyone interested in bike riding, at any level," said Kingsley, a Cherry Valley resident who owns The Inn at Cooperstown with his wife. "We're planning group rides and riding events for all ages and levels."

The third all-time leading scorer in Cooperstown basketball history will be taking his act to St. Lawrence University next year.

Jones helps Hall celebrate `Field of Dreams' milestone
On a visit to the National Baseball Hall of Fame on Saturday, legendary actor James Earl Jones let slip a secret. Jones' deep, resonant, booming voice gave life to authoritative and intimidating characters like Darth Vader in "Star Wars," and Mufasa in "The Lion King", but the veteran of nearly 80 films described himself as a "big pussycat" in real life. Jones was at the museum Saturday to help lead the 15th anniversary tribute to the film "A Field of Dreams."

London trip scores big with C-town field hockey
The Cooperstown field hockey team's trip to London, England over spring break was an unqualified success, both from a team and personal perspective, said head coach Brenda Wedderspoon-Gray, who organized the trip.

Despite missing several key scorers who left early for spring break, and two more due to injury, the Cooperstown boys track and field team lost by just six points to Center State Conference power Sauquoit last Thursday at Lambert Field. "That's a positive," said CCS head coach Don Howard. "Early season meet aren't about winning or losing, they're about finding out what the kids can do. We're starting to put the pieces of the puzzle together."

Boys track may have just enough answers to compete
Cooperstown boys track and field coach Don Howard has many questions about his team entering the season, but he's hoping if they're answered in a positive way his team can compete for the Center State league title in his 40th and possibly final season of coaching at Cooperstown. "We're young and we lost a great deal of talent to graduation but we have some potential," Howard said. "Out of 17 events, we have a chance to have quality competitors in 14 or 15 of them."

Cooperstown girls track team is young, talented
One might think with 20 newcomers and just 12 returnees on the roster, Cooperstown girls track coach Connie Herzig would view this season as a rebuilding year. But with what she described as a very talented freshman class, Herzig is anxious for the season, which begins March 31 at Fonda, to begin. "I don't know exactly what to expect, but I can tell you that I am very excited about this group," Herzig said Tuesday morning. "This is the smallest group of returnees I've ever had, but we've been working hard and this group has a great attitude and is fun to work with."

Hockey team has raised over $10,000
Through fund-raisers, special events and donations, members of the Cooperstown field hockey team have raised a little over $10,000 toward their planned trip to London, England in two weeks, and team coach and trip organizer Brenda Weddersoon-Gray said the trip is a go.

Howard's 40th year likely to be his last
In 1964, a young Don Howard volunteered to help out then Cooperstown boys track and field coach Bill Eldridge with some of the younger athletes on the team. The rest, as they say, is history. Now 40 years later, Howard is set to begin what will likely be his final year as head coach. In '64, Howard brought some of the younger team members to a developmental meet at Damaschke Field in Oneonta.

Today begins, as I like to call it, "the most wonderful time of the year." That may be Christmas for some, but for basketball fans that can only mean one thing-the beginning of the men's NCAA Tournament.

Local woman to cycle 3,135 miles for charity
OAKSVILLE-Barbara Chamberlain doesn't consider herself a cyclist, but after pedaling from California to Florida, starting today and ending May 7, she may change her mind. Chamberlain is a member of the local Relay for Life team, Team Cinderblocks, and will represent the team on the bike ride. Chamberlain, 61, will bike with other women over the age of 50 to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

Milford girls run out of gas, 64-55
AFTON-In reality Saturday's Milford-Afton girls basketball match-up was a Section Four Class D quarterfinal game, but at times it seemed more like a boxing match with both teams trying to knock the other out with big scoring runs. In the end, it was Afton and standout senior guard Renee Kemmerer that delivered the decisive blow, scoring 15 straight points in the final two minutes to take a 64-55 victory.

Hill loses in final at state tourney
BUFFALO - If history means anything, Cooperstown junior wrestler Brendan "Poppy" Hill will win a state wrestling title next year.

Weir sets scoring record
She probably would have rather had a win than a record, but Milford junior Shannon Weir set the school's all-time scoring record during her team's 64-55 loss to Afton in a Section Four Class D quarterfinal game Saturday night.

Redskins' rally falls short, 75-66
TULLY—Shane Connolly's three-point jumper from halfcourt at the third quarter buzzer began a fourth quarter comeback that fell just short as the Cooperstown boys basketball team lost a 75-66 decision to Tully in a Section Three Class C-1 quarterfinal game Tuesday night. The loss ends Cooperstown's season at 13-8, a year after their 26-1 dream season which ended in the state finals.

King of the Hill?
UTICA—Brendan "Poppy" Hill breezed through the competition at the Section Three Class C section finals Sunday at the Utica War Memorial, becoming the first wrestler since Packy Burke in 1998 to qualify for the state wrestling tournament.

The Cooperstown boys basketball team will begin defense of its Section Three Class C title on Tuesday when they play Tully in a first round contest at Tully.

CCS boys finish 13-7, hope for home sectional game
The Cooperstown boys basketball team pulled yet another upset at home last Thursday, spanking league leading Sauquoit 71-53, but followed that up with another road loss at Herkimer Monday night to end the regular season.

Grappler VanBuren wins league title
Cooperstown junior wrestler Ted VanBuren, despite being seeded fourth, won the 160-pound weight class with two exciting wins at the Center State Conference league tournament last Saturday.

Redskins boys league title hopes likely over after loss
After an emotional 64-51 victory over Mt. Markham last Thursday night, the Cooperstown boys basketball team likely lost any chance for a second straight Center State Conference division title with a 77-67 loss at Waterville Monday night.

Six teams hit with suspensions
Six winter sports teams at Cooperstown Central School were hit with player suspensions last week after it was brought to the attention of school officials that many student/athletes had attended a party and violated the school's interscholastic athletics code of conduct.

CCS volleyball just can't shake `Canastota Curse'
Despite their best effort and one of the best volleyball games ever played in Cooperstown's Bursey Gymnasium, the "Canastota Curse" is still alive and kicking for the CCS volleyball team. The Lady Redskins lost the first two sets of their match with the Red Raiders on Saturday afternoon, but a remarkable turnaround, which almost resulted in their second comeback win from two sets down in a week, turned what was a ho-hum match into a five set thriller.

The Cooperstown boys basketball team avenged one earlier season loss on Saturday night, and will shoot for more revenge tonight (Thursday) when they host Mt. Markham in a key Center State Conference game.

Tri-Valley races heat up
MILFORD—The Edmeston boys basketball team used athleticism and physical play to take an important, 57-49, victory at Milford Tuesday and create chaos on both sides of the Tri-Valley league. The win, coupled with Laurens' loss to Franklin Tuesday, leaves Edmeston and Laurens tied atop the Tri-Valley West. Milford fell into a two-way tie for second in the T-V East with Worcester, while Franklin moved into first place, one game ahead of both schools.

Milford takes Mann-size victory over Laurens
MILFORD—This is the game Milford head coach Frank Spurchise has been waiting for out of his 6'6" senior center. Ken Mann scored 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Wildcats to a key, 53-45, Tri-Valley league victory over Laurens Tuesday night, keeping Milford tied for first in the Tri-Valley East with both Worcester and Franklin. Now the Wildcats will hope to get some help from the Leopards when they host Worcester Friday night, as things heat up in T-V play even while the temperatures continue to drop.

Weir likely out until sectionals
Milford junior basketball star Shannon Weir, who broke her ankle two days before Christmas, had the cast removed from her leg on Monday.

`It was a classic'
Ten years ago today, on Jan. 8, 1994, Cooperstown's Bursey gymnasium played host to possibly the most-anticipated sporting event in school history. The boys basketball game between Cooperstown and Hamilton featured arguably the two best opposing players to ever play in Center State Conference competition. Cooperstown was led by Seth Schaeffer, the highest scoring player in Cooperstown history; while on the opposing side was Hamilton's 6'10" center Adonal Foyle, currently an NBA center.

Bertram says team will turn it around
After slipping to 6-4 on the season with a 71-53 loss to Little Falls Saturday night, Cooperstown head coach Dave Bertram said his team was ready to turn it around against Waterville last night at Bursey gymnasium.

CCS's Leonard scores 14 after getting 21 stitches
DAVENPORT—Maybe Dana Leonard should get hit in the head more often. Fresh off getting 21 stitches in her forehead over the weekend after what Cooperstown girls basketball coach Frank Miosek described as a "holiday family accident" the sophomore forward scored 14 points to help lead the Lady Redskins to a 50-36 defeat of Walton in the first round of the Davenport Holiday Tournament on Monday night.

Milford boys lose to Markham; girls beat Roxbury w/o Weir
EDMESTON-Any hopes the Milford boys basketball team had of upsetting Mt. Markham were quickly doused during the first round of the Edmeston Holiday Tournament Saturday night.
