Weir breaks her ankle
MILFORD—Milford girls basketball sensation Shannon Weir chipped a bone and dislocated her ankle during practice Monday, and is out four to six weeks, according to her father and coach, Jim Weir. Shannon's injury was caused when she landed on a teammate's foot while grabbing a rebound. The timing is especially painful for the Weir family, as Shannon, a junior, was just 20 points away from breaking older sister Becky's all-time scoring record at Milford of 1,611 career points. Shannon has 991 points, and Becky was planning top attend the Lady Wildcats' game against Roxbury Monday to watch her little sister break her record.

Redskins aim for third straight tourney title
If the Cooperstown boys basketball team is to win its third straight holiday basketball tournament, they will have to earn it.

Graham, Colgate will play for title
FT. LAUDERDALE-Playing through the pain of a partially separated shoulder, Cooperstown native Luke Graham caught two first half touchdowns to help the undefeated Colgate men's football team to a 36-24 victory over Florida Internation in a Division 1-AA semifinal game last Saturday.

C-town boys improve to 5-1; play Markham Friday
The Cooperstown boys basketball team improved to 5-1 with a 71-61 victory over Herkimer Tuesday night at Bursey Gymnasium, but head coach Dave Bertram wasn't necessarily satisfied with the result.

Cooperstown native is leading receiver for undefeated Colgate
HAMILTON-It is the best of times and the worst of times this week for Luke Graham, a Cooperstown native and the undefeated Colgate football team's leading wide receiver. Graham, who attended CCS through the eighth grade, and Colgate will head to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., this Saturday to play Florida Atlantic (11-2) in a Division 1-AA semifinal playoff game. The game will be televised on ESPN 2 beginning at 1 p.m. The championship game is set for Dec. 19 at Chattanooga, Tenn. The other semifinal game will be between Delaware and Wofford.

Newcomers help Milford win third straight title
MILFORD-Try as they might, the Milford girls basketball team could never quite put away Cooperstown in the final of the Anton Remy Tournament Saturday night. But in the end, the Lady Wildcats held on for 39-37 victory to win their second straight Remy title over the neighboring Redskins, and third straight overall. "We had a couple of chances to really put a run on them but they kept coming back," said Milford head coach Jim Weir. "Cooperstown isn't very deep, but they have five pretty good starters."

CCS boys search for more offense
Although Cooperstown senior guard Shane Connolly is just 11 points shy of 1,000 points for his career, head coach Dave Bertram did not allow him to shoot the ball during practice on Monday. Why?

Molitor, Eckersley likely to be Hall of Fame electees in 2004
Paul Molitor should be a surefire first ballot Hall of Fame electee when baseball writer's voting is announced early next year. Molitor, who played the majority of his career with the Milwaukee Brewers, accumulated 3,319 career hits and had a lifetime batting average of .306. He headlines the list of 15 newcomers on the Hall of Fame ballot for 2004.

CCS girls begin season Friday
Two of the Cooperstown girls basketball team's five starters will come from the Leonard family in Kristen, a senior, and Dana, a sophomore. Both are close to six feet tall, and will give the Lady Redskins a solid inside presence when the season begins Friday in the opening round of Milford's Anton Remy Tournament against Edmeston at 2 p.m.

Milford girls have four starters back from 22-1 team
MILFORD-Being the third wheel on a date is nobody's idea of fun. But being the fifth wheel on the Cadillac that is the Milford girls basketball team could be very enjoyable.

Edmeston revels in first state title
For a team that prides itself on unselfishness and team play, the Edmeston boys soccer team made the best of being greedy as well in winning the first state championship in team and school history last weekend. Although they will have nine of their 11 starters back next year, Panthers head coach Jim Huntington urged his team to make the most of their state Final Four appearance last weekend in front of a large, spirited crowd at Oneonta's Wright National Soccer Campus.

Frank Miosek lauded as great coach, family man
During the annual Patrick C. Fetterman award luncheon honoring Frank Miosek at the Otesaga last Friday, friends, family and colleagues painted a portrait of him as a hard working and intense coach who cares deeply about his students and athletes, Fetterman was a longtime associate director at the Clark Sports Center, then known as the A.C.C. gym, and was known for his special connection with youngsters. Miosek's daughter, Molly, said her father is the same way.

Woman `refuses to lose' her breast cancer battle
At age 47, Richfield Springs' John Sovocool ran the New York Marathon on Sunday in two hours, 55 minutes and 28 seconds, good for 294th place out of nearly 23,000 male runners. Impressive by any standards.

CCS girls lose stunner to Lowville in final seconds
This one had to hurt. The Cooperstown girls soccer team's season came to a screeching halt when Lowville's Chelsea Barry netted the game-winner with just 33 seconds remaining in regulation to break a 1-1 tie and give Lowville the victory in a Section Three Class C-1 quarterfinal contest. The loss ended the Lady Redskins season at 14-4-1 overall. "We were equally matched teams and it was a tough loss," said second year CCS girls soccer coach Jennifer Pindar. "The girls played their hearts out."

Speed kills C-town boys sectional run in semifinals
UTICA-As dramatic as Cooperstown's quarterfinal victory was, their semifinal loss to Manlius-Pebble Hill was equally anti-climactic, as they lost an 8-0 decision in the Section Three Class C tournament at Utica-Proctor High School's D'Alessando Stadium Tuesday night.

CV-S girls soccer will get third shot at Worcester
CHERRY VALLEY—The Cherry Valley-Springfield girls soccer team and head coach Jen Moore will get their wish—a rematch with Worcester on Friday. The sixth seeded Lady Patriots defeated 11th seed Margaretville, 1-0, in a Section Four Class D first round game here on a windy and cold Tuesday afternoon to set up a third game with the Wolverines at 3:30 p.m. in Worcester. The Tri-Valley East rivals split a pair of games this season, with CV-S winning the first, 2-0 at home in September, and Worcester winning the second, 2-1, on Oct. 7 to all but eliminate the Lady Patriots from the league race.

Cooperstown football loses in final seconds, 34-27
In a game for the ages, the Cooperstown football team erased a 13-point second half deficit to take a 27-26 lead with just three minutes remaining in their regular season finale against Sauquoit on Saturday at Lambert Field.

SAUQUOIT-The Cooperstown girls soccer team's march toward a Center State Conference title all but ended here on Saturday with a 2-0 loss to Sauquoit. With a win, the Lady Redskins would have moved into first place, but the loss puts them a game and a half out with just one regular season game remaining, at home today against Mt. Markham.

Tom Seaver talks baseball at Hall of Fame
During a visit to Cooperstown Friday, Tom Seaver said Mets' 20-year-old shortstop Jose Reyes is a potential Hall of Famer, that a 1970 trip to the Hall of Fame was the best vacation he ever had, and that the no-hitter he threw for the Reds was not even one of his top 10 games. Seaver, a 1992 Hall of Fame inductee who amassed 311 career wins, was in Cooperstown as part of the Hall of Fame's Legends Series, which periodically brings Hall of Famers and other baseball greats to Cooperstown to talk about their careers.

MT. MARKHAM-The Cooperstown football team still had too many turnovers and penalties against Mt. Markham to suit head coach Steve Pugliese, but they got the most important thing right-they won. The 13-0 victory evens Cooperstown's record at 2-2 heading to this Saturday's Homecoming game against winless Waterville at 7 p.m. at Lambert Field.

CCS girls move into second; Valentine up to 13 goals
The Cooperstown girls soccer team improved to 4-1-1 in Center State Conference play and moved into second place with a 3-2 home victory over Canasota Tuesday. Freshman Ellie Mellor, one of two freshman moved up to the varsity last week by head coach Jennifer Pindar, assisted the game-winning goal. She took a crossing pass from Dana Leonard and skipped a pass to Molly Streck, who beat two defenders and Canastota goalkeeper Kaleena Hoch with a shot to the upper left-hand corner of the goal.

C-town football scores late to win first, 14-13
THOUSAND ISLANDS-Overcoming a nearly four hour bus ride and what Cooperstown head coach Steve Pugliese described as unbelievably bad officiating, the Cooperstown football team still managed to win their first game of the year, 14-13, here Saturday afternoon.

MILFORD-The Milford girls soccer team made sure the first game at their new soccer field was a memorable one, taking a come-from-behind, 4-3 victory over Tri-Valley rival Cherry Valley-Springfield on Monday to remain undefeated.

Redskins fumble away opener
The Cooperstown football team's fumble on its first possession Saturday in the season opener against Herkimer could be chalked up to nerves. Another fumble on the second possession led to Herkimer's first touchdown, and was cause for concern. But the fumble right before the half, which Herkimer returned for a touchdown with four seconds remaining, was the killer.

The Cooperstown football team lost just one regular season football game last year, but it proved to be costly. Their loss to Herkimer in week two prevented a second straight undefeated regular season, a league title, and the top seed in sectionals. The Redskins lost to eventual sectional champion Onondaga in the Class C semifinals, marking the third straight year they have lost in the semifinals.

After a couple of unusual down seasons, the Cooperstown boys soccer team rebounded with a 10-7 record a year ago. Head coach Frank Miosek said he wants to keep that momentum going when the season begins Sept. 8 at home against Morrisville.

Long awaited J.V. football begins at Cooperstown
While it's true Cooperstown added a junior varsity football team this year, you wouldn't know it by practice, which began on Monday. "We're looking at this as two parts of the same program," said junior varsity head coach Glen Noto on Tuesday. "It's not a separate J.V. and a separate varsity. We practice together and all the players will dress for varsity games on Friday night or Saturday. Those that don't see significant playing time will play on Monday (in the J.V. game). All the players will be available for the varsity game."

With a slight change of plans, Beth Kerr was able to complete her benefit swim of the length of Otsego Lake in relative ease on Saturday.

Doubleday Field has seen its share of history, and next week it will be traveling back to the 1860's. The Atlantic Base Ball Club is fashioned after the original Brooklyn Atlantics of the 19th century, who team member Frank Obedienzo said were one of baseball's first dynastys.

Saturday lake swim to raise money for cancer research
EXETER, NH-On Saturday morning, Aug. 16, Beth Kerr of Exeter, New Hampshire, a 1983 Cooperstown graduate, will step into the waters off Springfield Landing at the northern most tip of Otsego Lake and embark on a long distance swim down to Lakefront Park at the southernmost tip of the lake.

Induction, Game to stay separate
It's official. The Hall of Fame Game and Induction Ceremony will again be held on separate weekends next year. The ceremony will be held on Sunday, July 25, and the game on a yet to be determined date in June, according to Hall of Fame spokesman Jeff Idelson. Hall of Fame president Dale Petroskey met with Major League baseball officials last week to discuss the possibility of keeping the two events on separate weekends, as they were this year.

All Stars take second at Walton tournament
The 2003 Cooperstown Youth Baseball Major League All-Star team took home impressive second place trophies in the annual Walton Little League Tournament. It was the first time a Cooperstown team participated in the event and the team certainly held their own. Teams from Afton, Oneonta, Stamford, Sidney, Unadilla and Walton rounded out the field. Cooperstown drew powerhouse Sidney as their opening opponent on Wednesday, July 16th. Led by a devastating hitting attack and solid pitching, Sidney prevailed, 12-4.

The pastoral village of Cooperstown will serve as the center-stage setting July 25-26-27-28, as the National Baseball Hall of Fame welcomes the 2003 class of electees, Gary Carter and Eddie Murray, to highlight Hall of Fame Weekend.

Hall to meet with MLB about Induction, Game
Officials hope to set the date for next year's Hall of Fame Game and Induction before the close of this year's Ceremony set for July 27. Hall of Fame spokesman Jeff Idelson said president Dale Petroskey will meet with major league baseball officials before the Induction Ceremony next weekend to discuss the possibility of keeping the Hall of Fame Game and Induction on separate weekends. "We hope to have a decision by the Induction," Idelson said. "Then, we could announce next year's dates at this year's event, and people could plan accordingly."

Small Wonder
Ask Molly Pearlman how tall she is and she'll tell you "Four foot-four inches-in cleats." The 10-year-old Cooperstown youngster relates almost everything to baseball these days, and in return baseball has been treating her to some exciting experiences this summer. This week, Molly has been playing on The Sparks, the first all-girls baseball team to play at the Cooperstown Dreams Park, and in August will be headed to Japan to play in the World Children's Baseball Fair. "I expected this to be hard and it is hard," Molly said of her Dreams Park experience during a game on Tuesday.

All Stars win Sherburne tourney
The Cooperstown Major League All Star team had a little extra reason to celebrate on the Fourth of July. Cooperstown took a pair of extra inning victories over Cazenovia and Unadilla Valley to capture the championship of the Sherburne Tournament last Friday, then traveled to the Cal Ripken state qualifying district tournament in Albany over the weekend.

Walk to raise money
HARTWICK-If Michele Dibble and Maria Folts have their way, this town will be full of street walkers on Wednesday, July 16. The pair are planning a March of Dimes "WonderWalk" which will include 45 youngsters from the Hartwick Summer Playground. The walkers are busy getting pledges from family and friends as the walk approaches. "They're just going to family and friends," Folts said. "At different pledge levels, people will receive prizes. It's really a great cause."

The Cooperstown Youth Baseball Major League All Stars finished second in their own six team tournament over the weekend, losing in the championship game to Niskayuna, 9-8.

Cooperstown honors athletes at banquet
The 44th annual Cooperstown Sports Booster Club's All Sports Banquet Friday night honored athletes of the past, two longtime retiring coaches, and of course the 2002-03 student/athletes who made the past season one of the most memorable in recent memory, highlighted by the Cooperstown boys basketball team's electrifying run to the state finals.

Coaches' consistency will be missed
Jerry Townsend and Tom Cannistra are hitting the road again, but this time the finish line will be a place of their choosing, not another game somewhere in Central New York. After a combined 52 years teaching and coaching in Cooperstown, mostly on the junior varsity and modified level, both are retiring.

Part One of Hall of Fame Weekend was a smashing success, according to Hall of Fame president Dale Petroskey and Chamber of Commerce president Polly Renckens.

Carter gets Hall initiation
It's official: Gary Carter is a rookie again. After answering a question in his usual longwinded fashion during a special Legends series event with Hall of Fame catchers Johnny Bench and Carlton Fisk Monday morning in Cooper Park, Carter was subjected to some good-natured ribbing from Bench.

Hribar, Barown fifth at states
For Matt Barown and Billy Hribar, last Friday's state track and field meet at Union-Endicott was the culmination of year's of hard work and practice. Fittingly, both came up with their best ever performances, winning state medals in the process, to cap tremendous careers and seasons. Hribar, competing in the discus, threw 151 feet, eight inches on his first throw, the first time he had ever thrown over 150 in a meet, and seven feet further than he had thrown in a competition all year.

Cooperstown is the place to be with your dad, grandfather and children this Father's Day Weekend, as the Baseball Hall of Fame plays host to a series of specially-themed family events on June 14-16.

Barown, Hribar head to state meet
If Billy Hribar was a horse, they would call him a mudder. Competing in the discus in a steady rain and slippery conditions at the state qualifier in North Syracuse Saturday, Hribar threw 143 feet and one inch, finishing third overall in all classes, to qualify for the state meet. Fellow senior Matt Barown will be joining Hribar at the state meet this Friday and Saturday at Union-Endicott after qualifying in the 400 hurdles with a career-best time of 56.37. The winning time in Division II was just 7/100s of a second better.

Cring's have inside track to Triple Crown
A little over a year ago, Mike Cring and his brother Matt, both of Cooperstown, were in Albany playing cards with some family members, including their uncle, Harold Cring. Harold commented that his group's newly acquired horse might be good enough to qualify for the Kentucky Derby the following May.

Barown, Smith hope to get back to state track and field meet
The Cooperstown boys track team had career best performances from several athletes at last week's Section Three Class C-1 meet at Canastota, but in most cases the competition was even better. The Redskins finished fourth in the 14 school meet and will bring six athletes to the open state qualifer at Cicero-North Syracuse on Saturday. The top four finishers in each event qualify for the open qualifier. Senior Brian Henrici had a great day, jumping 20 feet four inches in the long jump, the first time a Cooperstown long jumper has jumped over 20 feet in 26 years, according to head coach Don Howard.

CCS tennis doubles up for state tourney
Cooperstown juniors Reid Snyder and Finn Dusenbery have proven they are the best doubles team in the area, now they get a chance to take on the Big Apple.

Feinberg makes state tournament
Cooperstown junior Nick Feinberg shot a 43 at Seven Oaks Golf Course in Hamilton on Saturday, which was just good enough to qualify him for the state golf tournament this Sunday and Monday at Cornell University.

Weir aiming for state berth; CV-S boys look for better performance
Milford sophomore Shannon Weir just missed out on a chance to play in state competition during basketball season, as her team lost its first game in the Section Four Class D final to Oxford. But now Weir has another shot at getting to states, this time in either the shot or discus field events. Weir and Milford will compete in the Section Four Class D track and field meet at Oneonta High School today, the first step toward qualifying for the state track and field meet.

CANASTOTA-The Cooperstown boys track team won the Center State Conference Championship for the second straight year Friday, but may give half of it back.

CV-S boys hope for T-V title
CHERRY VALLEY-Jordan Jaquay is hoping today's (Thursday's) Tri-Valley championship track and field meet will be a day of firsts. The Cherry Valley-Springfield track coach already knows his team will be hosting the T-V meet for the first time, and hopes his boys' team can mark the occasion with a first place finish. But he knows it won't be easy. "I would say Laurens is the favorite on the boys side and we've been coming on strong and have a shot at first along with maybe G-MU," Jaquay said.

Carter exuberant during Hall visit
"The Kid" came to Cooperstown. Gary Edmund Carter, Baseball Hall of Fame Class of 2003, was here last weekend for his pre-induction orientation visit, which included an informal press conference with the local media on Sunday morning.

Trout fishing season begins Tuesday

Twenty years ago this summer, Eddie Murray and Cal Ripken, Jr. participated in the annual Hall of Fame Game at Doubleday Field, got singles in their only at bats and left the game. Both then went to the old ACC gymnasium, which is now part of the Hall of Fame, and played basketball while the game continued.

CCS boys squeak by Herkimer on late basket
It's a fair bet Cooperstown senior Tyler Harris won't ever forget his last game or final points in Bursey Gymnasium. His three-point shot with 1:30 left in Tuesday's Section Three Class C-1 quarterfinal game against Herkimer erased a one-point deficit and helped the Redskins avoid what would have been a monumental upset.

ONEONTA-It's a safe bet that no team has ever won a Tri-Valley Championship and enjoyed it less than the Milford girls basketball team did Saturday night.

CANASTOTA—In a game played before an estimated 1,200 fans, including many from Cooperstown, the CCS boys basketball team fended off its biggest challenge to their undefeated record, scoring the final seven points to take a 63-56 victory over Canastota Tuesday night.

WORCESTER-In a battle for supremacy in the Tri-Valley Small, the Milford girls basketball team shook off a strong performance from Worcester senior Bethany Head to take a 55-44 victory in a game that was much closer than the score might indicate.

Simply put, it's getting to be crunch time in the Tri-Valley boys races. After Cherry Valley-Springfield lost its third straight league game Tuesday night, their once seemingly insurmountable lead in the Tri-Valley Large is now very tenuous.

Carter, Murray get call from Hall
Gary Carter and Eddie Murray will both be joining the elite group in the National Baseball Hall of Fame this summer-but in almost every other respect they are polar opposites. Carter and Murray will highlight the 2003 Hall of Fame Induction ceremony, slated for Sunday, July 27 on the grounds of the Clark Sports Center. They will be joined by any Veterans Committee electees, which will be announced Feb. 26.

Hribar helps C-town boys stay undefeated
Before the season began, first year Cooperstown boys basketball coach Dave Bertram said one of the keys to the season would be for his players to accept their role on the team. Perhaps that was toughest for 6'6" senior center Billy Hribar, a three year starter who Bertram decided not to start this year.
