CCS boys win streak snapped
The Cooperstown boys basketball team absorbed their first loss of the new year on Tuesday night, losing to Center State power Hamilton 70-63. The loss leaves the Redskins with a 13-6 record heading to Friday's regular season finale at home with Morrisville. Cring said a win Friday would go a long way toward securing both a first round bye and a home game in the second round of the upcoming Section Three Class C tournament. Cooperstown entered Tuesday's game as one of the hottest teams in the league, but played a poor first half, Cring said.

Milford clinches seventh straight title; beat G-MU
MILFORD-After clinching their seventh straight Tri-Valley division title with a win over rival Cherry Valley-Springfield last Wednesday, the Milford boys basketball team sent a message to Gilbertsville-Mt. Upton Tuesday night with a 63-54 victory in what was a preview of the Tri-Valley Championship Game at Oneonta State on Feb. 17. The message: Milford is clearly the class of the Tri-Valley. Not only are they undefeated in league play with one game remaining at Schenevus Friday, they have lost just five Tri-Valley games over the last seven years and defeated the Raiders in last year's title game.

CCS boys score comeback win
The Comeback Kids were up to their old tricks again Saturday night. For the second time in 10 days, the Cooperstown boys basketball team erased an 18-point fourth quarter deficit, running their winning streak to seven games with a 57-56 victory over Canastota Saturday night.

Little League facing player shortage
Cooperstown draws Little League players from around the country to play baseball at Doubleday Field and the Cooperstown Dreams Park, but getting local youngsters to participate is becoming an increasingly tough proposition. The Cooperstown Youth Baseball League held its annual registration this month, and just 32 players, enough for just three teams, signed up to play in the majors leagues. League officials were hoping for a 48 players in order to field four teams, but actually drew four less than last year's total of 36.

CCS boys win fifth straight; girls at 7-6
The Cooperstown boys basketball team won its fifth straight game Friday night with a 66-48 victory over Mt. Markham, avenging an earlier season loss to the Mounties. The Redskins jumped out to a 17-4 lead before Mt. Markham came back to cut the lead to seven, 27-20, at the half. Big man Billy Hribar scored 12 first half points on his way to a game-high 18, and Cooperstown's size and suffocating full court press helped them slowly pull away in the second half.

`Experts' mixed on Super picks
Want to know who will win this Sunday's Super Bowl between the New York Giants and Baltimore Ravens? Town Crier reporter Rita Ferrandino has a solid theory. "Bet the Ravens," she says. "They have a murderer on the team. A MUR-DER-ER!." Excellent point.

CCS boys win fourth in a row
It's official: the Cooperstown boys basketball team is a force to be reckoned with, as are young guns Jeremy Holmes and Shane Connolly. Holmes, a sophomore, and Connolly, a freshman, have been instrumental in leading the Redskins to four straight wins, including Tuesday night's improbable overtime win over first place Waterville. The Redskins, 8-5, who lost to Waterville by 20 points in their first meeting, didn't score for the first four minutes of the fourth quarter of Tuesday's game and were down 11 with about 1:50 to play.

Kelly hits 1,000 points, also nets game-winner
Milford's Patrick Kelly became the fifth player in Milford boys basketball history to score 1,000 points during his career, hitting the milestone with a foul shot just before halftime of a non-league game against Stamford Saturday afternoon.

Cherry Valley man builds ice wall in his backyard
CHERRY VALLEY-There are practical uses to the ice wall in Tim Horvath's backyard, but he also admits it is akin to a big kid's swingset. The wall is seven feet wide and 30 feet high, and exactly what one might expect in the backyard of the most accomplished mountaineer in the area. "It helps me with my climbing technique," said Horvath on Monday afternoon while giving a short demonstration on the wall. "I'm willing to give beginners a chance to climb on it, and I've had friends come over and try it."

The 2001 Hall of Fame forecast
When the Crier asked me to submit my annual Baseball Hall of Fame election forecast, my first reaction was "why?" After all, my prediction for the 2000 election-published in the November 24, 1999 issue of this paper-had gone down swinging. I had said that Carlton Fisk would make it in his second try (he did), but that Tony Perez would "fall tantalizingly short" (he didn't, winning election with ten votes to spare). And that was my third mistake in four years!

Cooperstown boys fall to Little Falls in title game
For the first half of Friday night's Cooperstown Holiday Tournament, the host Redskins gave undefeated Little Falls all it could handle, leading by as many as eight points and taking a one point lead into the locker room. But a turnover-filled third quarter led to Cooperstown's demise, as Little Falls, 9-0, outscored the Redskins 20-5 on the way to a 67-55 victory.

Milford boys win on last second shot
EDMESTON-The Milford boys basketball team has a history of comebacks in Holiday Tournaments, and last weekend was no different. Trailing Unadilla Valley by five points with just over a minute remaining in the championship game of Edmeston's Christmas Tournament last Thursday, the Wildcats came back despite a horrendous night at the foul line.
