Coop boys, girls advance to semifinals
Both the Cooperstown boys and girls basketball teams will play in Section Three Class C-1 semifinals this week.
CV-S girls relish historic win in T-V Championship Game, 46-35
ONEONTA - The Cherry Valley- Springfield girls basketball team left no doubt on Saturday. The Patriots led the Tri-Valley Championship Game against defending champion Morris from start to finish, and the 46-35 victory was the program's first T-V title since the schools merged in 1989. "It was just a wonderful experience for our girls," said CV-S girls basketball coach Amy Garretson. "We were focused and just didn't let anything stop us."
World's largest soccer game planned
ONEONTA - In his first year at the SUNY College at Oneonta in 1988, College President Alan B. Donovan played goalie in a soccer game in which over 750 players attempted to set a record for the World's Largest Soccer Game.
Swim team completes successful season
The Cooperstown boys swim team rode the wave of a successful league championship into an impressive Section III sectional meet. There were four school records broken between the two meets, and scores of personal bests.
Volleyball swept in first finals appearance
SYRACUSE - Sickness, missing players and the bright lights of playing in a section final caught up to the Cooperstown volleyball team Saturday, as they were swept by Tully in the Section Three Class C-1 title game at Jamesville-DeWitt High School.

Coop boys, girls to host sectional doubleheader Fri.
The Cooperstown boys basketball team has received the top seed in the Section Three Class C-1 tournament, and after a first round bye will host a quarterfinal game on Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
Milford goes for upset in T-V boys title game Saturday
ONEONTA - A case could be made that the Milford boys basketball team backed into Saturday's Tri-Valley Championship Game against Laurens, but they won't be backing down from the challenge of playing the league's only undefeated team, said head coach Frank Spurchise.

CHERRY VALLEY - In what was likely a preview of the girls Tri-Valley Championship Game, Cherry Valley- Springfield managed to prevail with a tight, 39-35 victory over Morris Monday night.

Volleyball to host sectional game Fri.
The Cooperstown volleyball team has received the second seed in the Section Three Class C-1 tournament, and will host seventh seed South Lewis on Friday at 6 p.m. at Bursey gymnasium.

Richfield boys stun Cooperstown
Revenge was sweet for the Richfield Springs boys basketball team Tuesday night as they defeated Cooperstown, 64-57, in front of a standing room only crowd in Bursey gymnasium.
Coop girls hang on to beat S-E
SHERBURNE - It seemed Sherbrune-Earlville figured if you can't beat 'em, beat on 'em during their Center State Conference game with Cooperstown Monday night.
Patriots will again be Super on Sunday
Finally, a Super Bowl, which in theory anyway, should live up to its name. Not since future Hall of Fame quarterbacks John Elway and Brett Favre faced off in the 1998 Super Bowl does the Big Game have mass appeal.

Heart walk is Feb. 9
In an effort to fight heart disease, Bassett Healthcare has teamed-up with the State University of New York College at Oneonta to make it easier for area residents to contribute to the American Heart Association's Greatest Heart Run & Walk this February.
Milford-CV-S to meet in key games
This is where the fun begins. The Milford boys basketball team holds a one-game lead over Cherry Valley-Springfield and a two-game lead over Worcester in the Tri-Valley East, with four league games remaining.
Volleyball loses classic

Hall attendance up 13 percent
Buoyed by record breaking Induction Weekend crowds and a Major League Baseball season full of historic milestones, attendance at the National Baseball Hall of Fame last year rose 13 percent over 2006, according to Hall spokesman Jeff Idelson.

The Cooperstown volleyball team had a busy week, sweeping matches from Sauquoit, Owen D. Young and Unatego, and getting swept by Center State Conference power Canastota on Saturday.
Wrestling wins on Senior Night
The Cooperstown wrestling team hosted senior night during their final home meet of the season on Tuesday night, a 48-30 victory over Dolgeville. The five seniors, including team captains Brock Bell and Mike Croft, were recognized before the start of the meet.

Longtime area umpire Chet Collins dies
Longtime area umpire Chet Collins died on Sunday at the age of 85. Collins umpired Cooperstown High School games for over 20 years, and umpired in the area for 38 years despite not becoming an umpire until the age of 40. He appeared at the end of the 1992 movie "A League of Their Own" but was known locally as much for his humor and love of the game as for his skill and longevity as an umpire. The following is a story which first appeared in the Town Crier in June of 1998
