SYRACUSE - Sickness,
missing players and the
bright lights of playing in a
section final caught up to the
Cooperstown volleyball team
Saturday, as they were swept
by Tully in the Section Three
Class C-1 title game at
Jamesville-DeWitt High
School.
Senior captain Kyle Mackie
missed the semifinal and
final game as she was away
on vacation, and CCS's top
two players, Kim Armstrong
and Katie Horrigan, were
sick with colds, according to
head coach Rich Jantzi.
"Neither one of them could
talk and it was tough for
them to play up to their abilities,"
Jantzi said. "Tully had
a gym full of fans there and
we had about 25 people. We
were pretty shell-shocked
with the whole experience."
Cooperstown fell behind
15-2 in the first game and
never really recovered, losing
8-25, 20-25 and 21-25.
"The positive thing is
we're a young team and this
experience will only help us
next year," Jantzi said. "This
team really exceeded my expectations.
It's the first group
to make a section final in
program history, and I think
we'll be even a touch better
next season."
Cooperstown, which finished
the season with a 15-7
record, will return 11 players
next season, including Armstrong,
who is already the
program's all-time leader in
career assists, and Horrigan.
Cooperstown's depth was
evident in Thursday's fourgame
win over Port Byron in
the C-1 semifinal at Bursey
Gymnasium. Mackie and
Horrigan (sickness) missed
the contest, but some younger
players, most notably
sophomore Eryn Bass, filled
in admirably.
Bass had nine aces in the
25-21, 25-17, 19-25, 25-12
victory. Armstrong also had
nine aces to go along with 13
assists and three kills, while
Laura Resnick, Laura Derouin
and Kiersten Pikarsky
had four kills each.
"That was really an awesome
win for us considering
the circumstances," Jantzi
said.
Tully, 20-2, met undefeated
Dolgeville for the overall
C championship Wednesday
