Swim team completes successful season

WRITER

POSITION

The Cooperstown boys swim team rode the wave of a successful league championship into an impressive Section III sectional meet. There were four school records broken between the two meets, and scores of personal bests.

On Friday, Feb. 1, the Cooperstown boys traveled to Greene for the MAC league championship, and posted over 20 personal bests to snag second place in fast fashion. Andrew Hughes and Zach Mahlum started off the evening by finishing third and fourth in diving. The medley relay of Bonderoff, Harmon, R. Mayton, and Brigham started the night off with a season best. Following form to touch the wall with best times were: Peter Edmonds, Will Reis, Sean Killian, Sean Levandowski, Evan King, Quinn Hoffman, Marcos Soares, Todd Mayton, Brian Kent, and Jacob Fenno. Todd Mayton, Peter Edmonds, and the 400 relay team of T. Mayton, R. Mayton, Peter Edmonds and Sean Levandowski all took first places. The 400 relay team had the school record in their sights for several meets. When Todd Mayton anchored the relay at a personal best of 53.91, there was little doubt that the record would go down, but no one expected it to be shattered by over five seconds. Everyone swam his personal best split, by a considerable margin, and Todd just cemented an incredible relay. It was a great way to end the meet.

Sectionals were certainly tainted by the unfortunate weather hindrance, prohibiting Cooperstown's greatly improved diver, Andrew Hughes, from shining on the board. We cannot cap off the season without recognizing senior captain, Andrew Hughes, and the time and effort he has put into his diving. Andrew has improved greatly in his skill on the board, and in his dive repertoire. We hope Andrew pursues diving in college. He has a great work ethic and positive attitude that make it easy for coaches to work with him. Thanks also to Karen Caruso, our diving coach, who has worked with Zach Mahlum and Andrew Hughes this season.

On the blocks at the Syracuse sectionals were: Robert and Todd Mayton, Josh Brigham, Austin Lewis, Sean Levandowski, Robert Harmon, David Bonderoff, Tom Craig, and Will Reis. Todd broke the 200 and 500 free school records, setting the mark with a 1:58.34, and 5:25.37, respectively. David Bonderoff and Will Reis, both freshmen, dropped considerable time in their events, and will help provide strength to the team for the next three years. Coaches Rock and Haseley attribute their success to their unstoppable drive. These two swimmers work every set to the max, and they reaped the rewards of their hard work. Josh Brigham, a second-year varsity swimmer, posted his fastest in the 50 free with a 25.06, and looks to be our number one sprinter next season.

It's been a great season. We should be strong next year with 12 seniors. We say goodbye and good luck to Robert Mayton, Sean Killian, Andrew Hughes, Marcos Soares, Peter Edmonds, Bill Landon, and Greg Giovine.

Submitted by Coach Haseley.
