Coop boys, girls
to host sectional
doubleheader Fri.
Staff Report
The Cooperstown boys basketball
team has received the top seed
in the Section Three Class C-1
tournament, and after a first round
bye will host a quarterfinal game
on Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
Cooperstown, 17-3 overall, will
play the winner of the Port Byron-
Westmoreland opening round
game. Second seed Onondaga and
third seed Pulaski both received
first round byes as well.
If the Redskins win Friday, they
will play either fourth seed Mohawk
or fifth seed Sandy Creek
next Tuesday or Wednesday at a
site and time to be determined.
"If we play with intensity every
night, this is a group that could go
on a run and win a few games,"
said CCS basketball coach Dave
Bertram. "We're pretty balanced
offensively, and we play good defense."
If Cooperstown meets Onondaga
in the C-1 final, they will go up
against 1,000-point scorer Latavius
Murray, a 6' 4" senior who is going
to Central Florida University next
fall on a Division One football
scholarship, where he will play
running back.
The Redskins won Division II of
the Center State Conference with a
9-1 league record.
"We had a little lull in the middle
of the season, but we finished
strong," Bertram said. "I'm looking
forward to sectionals."
West Canada is the top seed in
C-2, and owns a perfect 20-0 record.
Coop girls get second seed
The undefeated Cooperstown
girls are the second seed in the Section
Three Class C-1 tournament,
and will also play at home Friday
at 6 p.m. against Port Byron.
If CCS, 20-0, wins that game,
they will likely face third seed
Bishop Ludden next Friday or Saturday
at a neutral site.
"If first round games are postponed
a day or two the girls game
could be moved to Saturday or next
Tuesday," said CCS athletic director
Mike Cring, who urged fans to
check viewmyschedule.com for updates.
Little Falls, also 20-0, was
awarded the top seed in C-1 based
on their superior record to Cooperstown
against Class C schools.
"We definitely got a tougher
draw by being the second seed,"
said Cooperstown girls coach Mike
Niles. "We'll play Bishop Grimes,
who are 17-3, in the second
round."
Grimes beat Cooperstown in the
Section Three Class C-1 semifinal
two years ago, and are a quick,
pressing style team.
"Hopefully, if we play Friday I'll
get a chance to scout them on Saturday
and Little Falls on Tuesday,"
Niles said. "I don't think it makes
that much of a difference who we
play, we're ready to go."
CV-S girls get
first round home game
The Cherry Valley-Springfield
girls basketball team has received
the third seed in the Section Four
Class D Tournament, and a first
round bye. They will host the winner
of the Hunter-Tannersville-
Gilboa first round game at 7 p.m.
on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m.
The Milford girls are the eighth
seed, and will host ninth seed
Schenevus on Wednesday, Feb. 20.
The Tri-Valley rivals met three
times during the regular season,
with Schenevus winning two of the
three.
Davenport is the number one
seed and South Kortright is seeded
second.
The Milford boys basketball
team will play at Tri-Valley foe
Worcester in the first round of the
Section Four Class D tournament
on Tueday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m.
Milford (10-8) edged Worcester
(10-7) for the T-V East title, but the
Wolverines beat Milford last week.
The winner of that game will play
another Tri-Valley team, second
seed Laurens, on Friday at 7 p.m.
in Morris.
Hunter-Tannersville is the top
seed, and Roxbury and Afton are
the third and fourth seed, respectively.
The Section Four Class D final
will be held Saturday, March 1 at
the Broome County Arena in Binghamton.
