CV-S girls, Milford boys win away from clinching

CHERRY VALLEY - In what was likely a preview of the girls Tri-Valley Championship Game, Cherry Valley- Springfield managed to prevail with a tight, 39-35 victory over Morris Monday night.

The loss was the first for the Mustangs (12-5, 9-1) in league play, while the Lady Patriots (15-1, 8-1) clinched at least a tie for first place in the Tri-Valley East. Morris has already wrapped up the T-V West title.

CV-S could have clinched the first division title in program history with a win at Edmeston last night, and also play at Worcester on Friday in the final regular season game.

If Monday was a preview of the championship game, which will be played Saturday, Feb. 16 at Oneonta State, there's a good chance it will be a good one.

Monday's game was close throughout, with Morris taking a five-point lead after one quarter, but CV-S fighting back to take a three point halftime lead.

"In the third quarter, they went to a box-and-one defense on (point guard) Morgan (VanAlstine) and it was effective," said CV-S girls coach Amy Garretson.

Morris held the Lady Patriots to four third-quarter points, and took a two-point lead into the final eight minutes.

They went up four with six minutes left, but CV-S got scoring from four different players in the final minutes to come back.

Fiona Doherty's threepoint basket with two minutes left, her only points of the game, gave CV-S a onepoint lead, and they never trailed again.

"That was a huge basket, and really gave us momentum," Garretson said. "The only difference in the game was that we were able to hit some big shots at the end of the game and their shots didn't fall. We were very evenly matched."

Junior center Laura Kroon had a game-high 15 points and held Morris center Kaitlin Meyers to just four points. VanAlstine added 11 points, while Courtney VanBrink, who averages double figures, scored just six points but pulled down 16 rebounds.

Morris is the defending Tri-Valley champion, defeating Milford in last year's T-V title game.

Boys T-V roundup The Milford boys basketball team inched closer to the T-V East title, with a big road win at Cherry Valley last Wednesday, 61-43, and can clinch the division with a win at Worcester tonight. A win tonight would send them to the Feb. 16 T-V Championship Game at Oneonta State against West winner Laurens.

"It's in our hands now," said Milford head coach Frank Spurchise. "We just have to go to Worcester and play our game. They have a good coach (Jim Kenyon), and I'm sure they'll be ready to play."

Against CV-S, Scott Seeley scored 17 of his 19 points in the first half, and Brian Edelstein had nine thirdquarter points.

"I thought the third quarter was the difference," Spurchise said. "We played very well defensively, and they seemed a little tight."

If Milford loses at Worcester Thursday, they would have another shot to win the title in the regular season finale at home Friday against Franklin.

The Wildcats lost a nonleague game at Roxbury Monday, 66-50, a game they played without injured senior center Sean Huffstickler, who should return for Thursday's game, Spurchise said.
