Coop girls, boys clinch
Center State league titles

It was a near perfect night at
Cooperstown's Bursey gymnasium
on Monday.
The Cooperstown girls basketball
team clinched a Center State
Conference division title, on Senior
Night, against a Sherburne-
Earlville team that gave them a
tough game last week.
After the 56-34 victory, Cooperstown
players and first-year head
coach Mike Niles took turns cutting
down the net as a souvenir of
their Division II title and memorable
regular season, which is one
win away from a perfect 20-0.
With a win at Mt. Markham tonight
(Thursday), the Lady Redskins
can wrap up the second undefeated
regular season in program
history, the first coming in 1988.
"When it's time to play, these
girls take it very seriously and
they're always ready," said first
year head coach Mike Niles. "Mt.
Markham could be a dangerous
team, but I think we'll be ready to
take care of business."
As they were last Monday, Cooperstown's
Samantha Fox and Jen
Wehner proved to be too much to
handle on the inside for the Marauders.
Fox (12 points) and Wehner
(8 points) combined for 12 firstquarter
points, and fellow senior
Katie Cring added 12 points.
Cooperstown led by 15 at halftime,
then sealed the game with a
19-4 third quarter run that put
them up by 30 and allowed the reserves
to play the fourth quarter.
"We had a physical game with
Sherburne last Monday and we
were pretty motivated to play,"
Niles said. "Their press gave us
trouble last week but we were much
more organized tonight. They knew
where they had to improve, and
they did it."
After Thursday's game, Cooperstown
will await their seeding in
the Section Three Class C tournament.
Like Cooperstown, defending
Section Three Class C champion
Little Falls is also likely to finish
the season undefeated. The first
round is scheduled for Feb. 15 and
16, and CCS is likely to get a first
round bye, Niles said. Niles said he
was unsure who get the top seed if
both teams are undefeated, and it
could be decided by a coin flip.
"It seems like we're onn a collision
course to meet at some point,"
Niles said. "It probably won't be
until either the C-1 or C final at a
neutral site. From everything I've
heard, we should be very evenly
matched."
Coop boys also clinch
The Cooperstown boys basketball
team bounced back from last
Tuesday's non-league loss to Richfield
with two big league wins, including
Tuesday night's 71-37 dismantling
of Sherbrune on Senior
Night.
The victory clinched Division II
of the Center State Conference for
the Redskins, who improved to 17-
3 overall and 9-1 in league play.
Cooperstown senior Quinn Snyder
set a program record single
season rebounding mark with 11
rebounds Tuesday to give him 187
on the season. Billy Hribar set the
previous mark of 186 in the 2002-
03 season. Snyder is averaging 9.5
rebounds-a-game, and had a season-
high 21 rebounds against Canastota
earlier this season. Snyder
also had 12 points while fellow senior
Luke Tirrell added 13 points.
Cooperstown also won at Sauquoit
last Saturday.
Cooperstown may be off for as
long as two weeks as they await
their seed in the Section Three
Class C tournament. CCS head
coach Dave Bertram said his team
is likely to get a first round bye and
likely won't play until either Feb.
12 or 13.
