Volleyball
loses classic
Staff Report
The Cooperstown girls volleyball
team played what head
coach Rich Jantzi described as
the team’s best match of the
year in a 3-1 home loss to Mt.
Markham Tuesday night.
The match included a classic
third game, possibly the
highest scoring single game in
Cooperstown history, which
the Mustangs eventually won,
38-36.
"I’ve never had a game go
that high and the Markham
coach said he hasn’t either,"
Jantzi said. "It was a great,
great game."
The Redskins had seven
game points, including at 35-
34, but failed to capitalize, and
used that momentum to gain
an early advantage in the
fourth set.
"We were kind of deflated
after losing, and it took us a
while to get back into it," Jantzi
said.
Markham won the fourth
set 25-18, completing a three
game sweep after losing the
opening set 25-16. They won
the second set 25-22.
"There was just a lot of
great volleyball played on both
ends," Jantzi said.
Junior Kim Armstrong had
20 assistsfour aces and four
kills in the match, while Katie
Horrigan had seven kills,
three assists and tweo blocks.
Kyle Mackie added five aces
and seven kills and Laura
Resnick also had five kills.
With the win, the Mustangs
imrpoved to 13-2 overall and
7-1 in Center State Conference
play, while Cooperstown fell
to 10-4 overall and 4-3 in
league play. CCS plays at Canastota
Friday night.
Cooperstown played in the
Mt. Markham tournament on
Saturday, and finished 3-3 in
their pool.
"There were a lot of big
schools there and we held our
own which is a good sign,"
Jantzi said.
