Milford-CV-S to meet in key games
By ERIC AHLQVIST

This is where the fun begins.
The Milford boys basketball
team holds a one-game lead
over Cherry Valley-Springfield
and a two-game lead over
Worcester in the Tri-Valley
East, with four league games
remaining.
Milford improved to 5-2 in
league play, with a 59-28 home
win over Gilbertsville-Mt. Upton
Friday night, while CV-S
lost what could be a costly
game to Franklin at home, 65-
60, to fall to 4-3 in league play.
The Patriots host Milford
Wednesday.
``That's probably the key
game to the season," said Milford
head coach Frank Spurchise.
``We control our destiny,
which is a nice position to be
in."
Franklin's Brian Schmidt
scored 13 of his 26 points in
the third quarter, including
three three-point shots, as
Franklin overcame a fourpoint
halftime deficit at Cherry
Valley Friday.
``We just kept losing him on
defense and he really burned
us," said CV-S head coach Jordan
Jaquay. ``We really didn't
play well defensively at all in
the game."
Anthony Brant and Jason
Guernsey combined for 37 of
the Patriots' 60 points. CV-S
played without starting forward
Zach Pacenak, who
sprained an ankle during
practice last week and could
miss two weeks.
Milford got 18 points from
Sean Huffstickler and 19
points from Brian Edelstein
against G-MU.
CV-S, 6-6 overall and 4-3 in
league play, are off until Jan.
28, when they travel to Davenport
for a non-league contest.
They host Milford on Wednesday,
Jan. 30 in a must-win
game in the Tri-Valley East.
``We put ourselves in a
tough position as far as winning
the league, and will probably
have to win the rest of
our games to win our side,"
Jaquay said.
On the girls side, undefeated
CV-S holds a two-game lead
over second place Milford in
the T-V East, and the teams
meet Tuesday in Cherry Valley.
Milford also has a tough
road game at Schenevus Friday
night.
CV-S improved to 11-0 with
an easy, 63-11 win at Franklin
Friday.
The Lady Patriots are off
until the Milford game.
