Volleyball swept
by Canastota
Staff Report
The Cooperstown volleyball
team had a busy week, sweeping
matches from Sauquoit,
Owen D. Young and Unatego,
and getting swept by Center
State Conference power Canastota
on Saturday.
CCS held a lead in each of
the first two sets against Canastota,
but lost 21-25 and 23-
25. They lost the third set 14-
25.
"Canastota was no better
than us, we just made way too
many mental mistakes," said
Cooperstown head coach Rich
Jantzi. "Missed serves and
lack of execution at times
hurt."
Kim Armstrong had 11 assists,
two kills and two aces to
lead Cooperstown's attack.
Sarah Dewey had five kills
and Kyle Mackie three kills
and an assist.
"I was very pleased with
our defense," Jantzi said. "We
only allowed two aces to Canastota."
The Lady Redskins bounced
back from Saturday's loss to
beat Unatego at home on Monday
night in straight sets, 25-
23, 25-10 and 25-23.
"Unatego was a tougher
match than I thought," Jantzi
said.
Cooperstown trailed 18-10
in the first set before rallying,
and took their first lead of the
third set at 24-23 before clinching
the set and match.
Armstrong, the program's
all-time leader in assists, had
14 more on Monday to go along
with six kills and an ace. Katie
Horrigan had six aces and
Laura Resnick four kills.
Cooperstown also defeated
Sauquoit, 25-23, 25-13 and 25-
15 last Thursday, and Owen
D. Young, 25-16, 25-18 and 25-
20.
"It's been a tough week
with five games in eight days,"
Jantzi said. "We have a rough
stretch of games coming up,
with two against Mt. Markham
and one against Canastota, so
the league will be decided by
Jan. 25."
Cooperstown is 10-4 overall
and 4-1 in league play, which
puts them in a second place tie
behind Canastota, which is
undefeated in league competition.
Markham and Canastota
play Friday night, and CCS
traveled to Mt. Markham last
night (Wednesday) and will
host the Mustangs on Tuesday.
