CV-S, Milford still battling in East

The Cherry Valley-Springfield boys basketball team bounced back from their fourth quarter collapse on Friday against Laurens to win a key road game at Gilbertsville-Mt. Upton on Tuesday night.

With the 49-39 victory, the Patriots improved to 4-2 in Tri-Valley play, and remained in a first place tie with Milford, who won at Morris, 62- 30, Tuesday night.

"Even though we had a tough loss to Laurens, we still control our own destiny," Jaquay said. "We just have to keep winning our league games, and we still play Milford again at our place."

On Friday against Laurens, CV-S had upset on its mind for three quarters before Laurens' press started taking a toll, leading to numerous turnovers by the Patriots.

"I don't know exactly why, but we just couldn't get the ball in (point guard) Jason Guernsey's hands in the fourth quarter," said CV-S head coach Jordan Jaquay. "I also thought Aaron Laing's defensive presence was a big difference in the game. He really dominates the middle."

Laurens' junior center finished with 15 points, 12 rebounds and six blocked shots, and the Patriots had trouble getting offensive production from anyone but senior Anthony Brant, who scored 12 of his team-high 16 points in the first half.

With Brant leading the way, the Patriots opened up a 20-8 first-half lead, but the Leopards, 11-1 overall, finished the half on a 17-4 run to take a one-point lead into halftime.

CV-S's David Adams hit a long three-point shot to tie the score at 34-34 with 1:30 remaining in the third quarter, but that was the final bright spot for the Patriots. Laurens scored the final five points of the quarter, and then outscored CV-S 22-7 in the final period, with most of the baskets easy lay-ups after steals and turnovers.

Brant had a team-high 14 points at G-MU, while Guernsey added nine and Mike Cagganello contributed three 3- point shots. CV-S hosts Franklin Friday.

The CV-S girls basketball team improved to 9-0 on the season with an easy, 58-40 win at Laurens on Friday. Junior center Laura Kroon had a career-high 17 points and 20 rebounds in the victory. The Lady Patriots hosted G-MU last night and play at Franklin Friday.

Even with their perfect start, the CV-S girls still own just a one game lead in the Tri-Valley East over defending East champion Milford.

The Lady Wildcats won at Edmeston, 51-43 on Friday to stay within a game of first.

"We're doing what we have to do to stay in it," said Milford head coach Jim Weir.

"Our offensive execution has really improved during the course of the season and we've been playing well."

Chandler Prouty had 13 points and 15 rebounds, Brenna Campbell had 15 points and Emily Brigham 14 points for Milford.

Milford has another tough game last night (Wednesday) when they hosted Morris and travel to G-MU on Friday. CVS defeated Milford in the teams' first meeting, and they play again in Cherry Valley on Jan. 29. The CV-S and Milford boys play Jan. 28, also in Cherry Valley.
