C-town volleyball
loses first of season
Staff Report
The Cooperstown volleyball
team lost its first match of the
season on Monday in straight
sets to undefeated Dolgeville,
14-25, 17-25 and 18-25.
"Their height was just too
much for us," said CCS volleyball
coach Rich Jantzi. "We
hung in there but made some
mistakes that young teams
make. It was the test we needed
before we head into league
play."
The Lady Redskins, 7-1,
will host Canastota on Saturday
at 3 p.m. in a big Center
State Conference match. Canastota
is 10-0 on the season
and a perennial powerhouse
in the league and section.
"I expect them to play
amazing defense like always,"
Jantzi said. "They are a shorter
team like us, but very athletic."
Against Dolgeville, Kim
Armstrong had nine assists,
two aces, and one kill; Katie
Horrigan, five kills, two assists,
and one ace; Kyle Mackie,
six kills, one assist, and one
ace; and Laura Resnick, three
kills and one block.
Cooperstown improved to
7-0 with a straight set win at
Richfield Springs on Friday
night, 25-6, 25-15 and 25-16.
"The first game of the
match was probably the best
the girls played all season,"
Jantzi said.
Armstrong, just a junior,
had 18 assists in the game,
and is now the school's alltime
leader in assists, Jantzi
said. She is averaging better
than 15 assists a game this
season.
In the next two weeks, Cooperstown
will play home and
away games with both Canastota
and Mt. Markham (9-1) in
games that will go a long way
toward deciding the league title.
"I am confident we can rebound
from the Dolgeville
loss," Jantzi said. "We needed
a tough game to see how we
stack up. The girls should be
happy to be 7-1, but we have a
lot of work ahead of us."
