Laurens-CV-S boys renew rivalry Friday

CHERRY VALLEY - A rivalry that began on the soccer field last fall will continue on the basketball court Friday night.

In October, the Cherry Valley- Springfield boys soccer team defeated Laurens in the Tri-Valley Championship Game, and won again in the Section Four Class D championship game three weeks later.

The Leopards will look for a measure of revenge Friday night. Laurens is in first place in the Tri-Valley West with a perfect 4-0 record, and has an overall record of 9-1, their only loss coming to South Kortright in the championship game of their own holiday tournament.

The Patriots have had more of an up and down season, but after last Friday's 56-45 win at Worcester have a 3-1 league record, and are tied with Milford for first place in the Tri- Valley East.

"We've had an inconsistent season, but we did a lot of things right on Friday," said CV-S boys coach Jordan Jaquay. "We played good defense, rebounded well and got balanced scoring. Those are the things we need to do to be successful."

Jaquay said senior Anthony Brant had his best all-around game of the season Friday as well, scoring 12 points, to go along with 10 rebounds and three assists. Zach Pecenak added 11 points and Weston Johnson and Mike Cagganello nine points apiece.

"We know Laurens is going to want to come in here and destroy us," Jaquay said. "We have to match their intensity and play a sound basketball game. Laurens is the best team in our league, so we know it will be a tough game."

The game will be part of CV-S's Homecoming Weekend as well, Jaquay added. Jaquay said the T-V East race between his team and Milford will probably come down to which team has a better record against T-V West opponents during the year.

Milford defeated CV-S in Milford back on Dec. 20.

"We have to win when they come to our place (Wednesday, Jan. 29) to have any chance at the league title," Jaquay said.

CV-S girls move to 8-0 In what head coach Amy Garretson described as an uninspired effort, the CV-S girls basketball team managed to stay unbeaten with a 38-37 win at Sharon Springs on Monday night in a non-league game.

Junior Courtney VanBrink had her usual double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 13 rebounds for the Lady Patriots.

CV-S also won a home game against Worcester last Friday, and play at Laurens on Friday night.
