Milford girls win Stamford tourney

STAMFORD - After scoring 30 points in the first quarter of an opening round win over Roxbury Thursday night, the Milford girls basketball team held host Stamford to just 25 points in a 38-25 tournament championship game win last Friday night.

"Stamford's a big team and we put good defensive pressure on them," said Milford girls basketball coach Jim Weir, whose team improved to 6-4 overall with the pair of wins. "We were able to get a big lead early and then hang on in the second half."

Weir said senior guard Brenna Campbell scored several key baskets late in the game that helped staved off Stamford rallies, which was one of the main reasons she was named the tournament MVP.

Prouty and Emily Brigham (14 points in opening round) were also named to the alltournament team.Campbell finished with 10 points, as did junior forward Chandler Prouty. Mariah Coville added nine points.

"We got good contributions from everyone," Weir said. "It's a good way to head in to January with some confidence."The Lady Wildcats will be tested right away, as they travel to Tri-Valley East rival Schenevus on Friday night. Schenevus beat Milford in a season-opening tournament game in November."They've already beaten us once and we're playing at their place," Weir said.

"But I think we're a better team than we were the first time and I'm curious how we'll respond."

The Milford boys basketball team nearly upset eventual tournament champion South Kortright in the first round of the Laurens Tournament last Thursday, but foul trouble and turnovers led to a 42-30 loss.

The Wildcats held a two-point halftime lead, and trailed just 36-30 in the fourth quarter.

"To know that we can play with them was encouraging," said Milford boys basketball coach Frank Spurchise. "Our defense has been very solid, but we have to try and get more players involved on the offensive end. At some point we've got to be able to put the ball in the basket."

Milford improved to 4-3 on the season with a 51-40 consolation round win over Hancock Friday. Scott Seeley had 12 points, eight rebounds and five steals to lead the Milford attack.

The Wildcats host Schenevus on Friday and Jefferson on Monday. The following week they play key games against Edmeston, Morris and G-MU.

"This stretch will go a long way toward deciding how we do this year," Spurchise said
