Coop girls cruise to title, boys lose first
By ERIC AHLQVIST
Editor
So much for the Cooperstown
girls basketball team's
supposed weaknesses.
Opposing team's scouting
reports often cite outside
shooting and trouble breaking
the press as the team's question
marks, but don't tell that
to Schenevus and Davenport.
The Lady Redskins beat
them both in Davenport's annual
Holiday Tournament last
Thursday and Friday.
"On Thursday against
Schenevus we broke their
press in textbook fashion,"
said CCS head coach Mike
Niles. "And on Friday against
Davenport our guards were
hitting the outside shots and
we got contributions from almost
everybody. It was gratifying,
because we work on
both aspects of the game quite
a lot in practice."
Cooperstown senior guard
Kate Cring was named tournament
MVP after going 6-for-
6 from the floor, and adding
six assists in a 55-31 championship
game victory over Davenport
Friday night. She
scored 10 points in an opening
round, 59-35, win over Schenevus.
Niles said fellow senior
Abby Hull had one of the best
games of her career Friday
night, scoring six first-quarter
points and playing great defense
on Davenport guard
Amanda Toombs. Hull was
also named to the all-tournament
team along with senior
Samantha Fox.
With the victories, Cooperstown
improved to 9-0 on the
season, and play Frankfort at
Herkimer County Community
College on Saturday afternoon.
"This tournament was really
encouraging, because we
showed improvement in areas
that used to be considered
weak spots," Niles said.
Niles added that the tournament
was a bittersweet experience,
as some Davenport
players were dealing with personal
tragedies. Chelsea
Haight's cousin, Collin, was
killed in a farming accident
last Wednesday, and she
missed both games, and center
Samantha Meyerhoff's grandfather
died recently as well.
"We know they were dealing
with a lot, and our thoughts
are with them," Niles said.
CCS boys lose first
The Cooperstown boys basketball
team fell from the
ranks of the unbeaten with a
57-46 loss to Westhill in the
championship of the Dick
White Boys Basketball Holiday
Tournament.
"It was an ugly game," said
CCS head coach Dave Bertram.
"We played good defense
but had 23 turnovers in the
game, which is way too many,
especially against a good team
like Westhill."
Westhill, a Class B team,
has two losses on the season,
both to state-ranked Class B
schools. After leading by four
at halftime, Westhill opened
up an 11-point third quarter
lead, but Cooperstown cut the
lead back to four in the fourth
quarter.
"We kept coming back, but
we could never get over the
hump," Bertram said. "Every
time we got close, they'd go on
another run and push the lead
back up."
Senior Quinn Snyder was
the only Cooperstown player
in double figures with 12
points, while junior Brad Ashford
added eight. Both were
named to the all-tournament
team. Ashford had a gamehigh
14 points in an opening
round 66-28 drubbing of South
Lewis on Thursday.
Before the South Lewis
game, the tournament was renamed
after longtime Cooperstown
boys basketball coach
Dick White, who died in October.
White's wife, Janet, and
son John were on hand for the
dedication, which was read by
Booster Club member Bruce
Wilhelm.
Also, Bertram said transfer
student Archie Hendrick is officially
off the team for personal
reasons. Hendrick had
missed the last six contests.
Cooperstown plays at
Frankfort on Friday.
