MILFORD - The Cherry
Valley-Springfield girls basketball
team rides the school
bus to games, and their Vans
during them.
Junior forward Courtney
VanBrink had 21 rebounds, 15
points and what proved to be
the game-winning lay-up with
a minute and 25 seconds remaining,
and sophomore
guard Morgan VanAlstine
contributed nine points, three
assists, four rebounds, and
four steals to lead the Lady
Patriots to a key, 42-40 victory
at Milford last Thursday.
CV-S improved to 4-0 overall
with the win, and have already
won at Schenevus and
Milford, which figure to be
their top competition in the
Tri-Valley East.
Defending T-V East champion
Milford fell to 2-1 in
league play and 4-4 overall.
"It was a hard-fought game
and I thought for a while there
they outhustled us," said Milford
girls basketball coach Jim
Weir. "They"re very big, and
we had trouble getting anything
going in the post."
CV-S jumped out to a 16-10
lead after one quarter, as Laura
Kroon had six first quarter
points, but went cold from the
floor in the second period, failing
to score for the first five
minutes as the Lady Wildcats
worked their way back into
the game.
Milford senior Maria Arnot
scored on consecutive possessions
to tie the score at 20, and
Chandler Prouty (12 points,
11 rebounds) added another
basket to give the Lady Wildcats
a 22-20 edge.
"We hadn"t played in two
weeks, and only had three
practices during that time, so
our conditioning isn"t at its
best," said CV-S girls basketball
coach Amy Garretson.
CV-S found its offensive
groove again in the third quarter,
with VanBrink and VanAlstine
combining for nine
straight points, including a
three-pointer from VanAlstine
that gave the Lady Patriots
their biggest lead of the night,
36-28, with a minute to go in
the quarter.
VanAlstine fed Kroon for
an easy basket to make it 40-
33 with five minutes left in the
game, but again the Lady Patriots
went on a scoring
drought, managing just one
more basket for the remainder
of the game.
"I definitely think we tired,"
Garretson said.
Sophomore Mariah Coville
(11 points) scored four straight
points for Milford to make it
40-37, and after a timeout,
VanBrink broke free behind
Milford"s press for a lay-up to
make it 42-37 with 1:25 left.
Coville added a free throw,
and senior guard Brenna
Campbell (11 points) hit a shot
from the top of the key to make
it 42-40 with 49 seconds left.
CV-S worked the shot clock
on its next possession, and
then rebounded a missed shot,
forcing Milford to foul. Kroon
missed the free throw with
five seconds left, but Campbell"s
potential tying shot from
the top of the key was short.
Milford will next play Roxbury
in the Stamford Tournament
on Dec. 27, while CV-S
heads to the Richfield Springs
Tournament Dec. 28. They
will play Tri-Valley foe Edmeston
in the first round at 6
p.m., with Richfield and St.
Johnsville meeting in the other
first round game. The consolation
and championship
games will be held Saturday,
Dec. 29.
