It may have taken a little longer
than planned, but Samantha Fox became
the Cooperstown girls basketball
team's all-time leading scorer Friday
night during her team's 57-43 victory
over Herkimer at Bursey gym.
Entering the game, Fox, a 6'3" senior
center, needed nine points to
break the previous record of 1,089
points set by 2006 Cooperstown graduate
Dana Leonard, who was in attendance
at Friday night's game. She
scored a combined 10 points in the
previous two games, well below her
average.
But on Friday, Fox scored six first
quarter points, and added a basket
early in the second quarter to tie the
record. She broke the record with just
over three minutes left in the half, and
the game was stopped briefly as Fox
was presented the game ball.
"She was pressing a little bit in the
two previous games, but it all worked
out pretty well for her to break the record
at home," said CCS girls basketball
coach Mike Niles. "It's a great accomplishment
and a record that will
be hard to break."
After Fox broke the record, she took
the ball to her mother, Lori, in the
stands and was given a standing ovation
from the near capacity crowd in
attendance.
Fox scored another basket in the
half and finished with 12 points and
11 rebounds. Teammate Jen Wehner
had seven points, 11 rebounds and
five blocked shots for Cooperstown,
which improved to 7-0 with the win.
The Lady Redskins will play in the
Davenport Tournament tonight
(Thursday) and will face Schenevus in
the first round at 6 p.m. Like Cooperstown,
Davenport, the fourth-ranked
team in the state in Class D, is also
undefeated, which could make for a
good championship game Friday
night.
Fox is just the third girl at Cooperstown
to break the 1,000-point mark.
Besides Leonard, 1987 graduate Dawn
Berry had 1,087 career points.
The all-time leading scorer in Cooperstown
basketball history, boys or
girls, is 1993 graduate Seth Schaeffer,
who finished with 1,719 points and
went on to play Division One basketball
at Colgate University.
Other 1,000-point scorers at Cooperstown
include Mike Nelson (1,456);
Shane Connolly (1,374); Charlie Coleman
(1,161); Reid Nagelschmidt
(1,065); and Jeremy Holmes (1,024).
