Milford boys proving
to be a stingy group

MILFORD - Someone
forgto to tell the Milford boys
basketball team this is the
season of giving.
The Wildcats used their
trademark smothering manto-
man defense to defeat Tri-
Valley East foe Worcester, 43-
28 on Friday night.
It was the second straight
game the Wildcats held their
opponent under 30 points, as
Cherry Valley-Springfield
scored 29 in a lopsided loss
last Tuesday.
"That's pretty impressive,"
said Milford head coach Frank
Spurchise. "Worcester had
been scoring a lot of points and
we completely shut down their
offense."
Like they had against CVS,
Milford held Worcester to
one shot most times down the
floor.
"We work on rebounding
for as much as 45 minutes
during practice," Spurchise
said. "We aren't a big team,
but sometimes rebounding
isn't about height, it's about
desire."
Junior Brian Edelstein had
a team-high 13 points for the
Wildcats, who led 18-7 after
one quarter. Sean Huffstickler
added 10 points and nine rebounds
for Milford.
With the win, Milford improved
to 3-2 overall and 2-1
in Tri-Valley play. They are 2-
0 in T-V East play.
"We're in the mix, and
that's what I wanted heading
to January," Spurchise said.
"If we got off to a slow start,
we could have been out of it
early. We have a long way to
go, but right now I feel very
good about this team."
The Wildcats will play in a
Christmas Tournament in
Laurens on Dec. 26 and 27.
They will play South Kortright
in one first round game at 6
p.m.
"They are big and athletic
and well-coached," Spurchise
said of the Rams. "They like to
press full court and we'll have
to deal with that. It will be
good competition, and that's
what you want in tournaments."
Milford will host Schenevus
on Jan. 4 and Edmeston on
Jan. 11.
The Milford girls basketball
team will get a big test
right before Christmas break
when they host Cherry Valley-
Springfield in a key Tri-Valley
East game on Thursday at 7
p.m.
Milford won the T-V east
last year, but the Lady Patriots
beat them in a Section
Four Class D quarterfinal
game last February.
CV-S already has a win at
Schenevus, and a win at Milford
Thursday would put them
in great position in the East
race.
