CCS volleyball wins tourney

Staff Report

The Cooperstown volleyball team won their second tournament of the season last weekend, going 9-1 during the Indian River tourney on Saturday.

CCS's Kim Armstrong was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, accumulating 13 aces, 14 kills and 51 assists in the 10 games.

"We played great all tournament long," said Cooperstown volleyball coach Rich Jantzi. "The girls are really starting to pick up their intensity, understand our offense, and play solid defense."

Senior co-captain Kyle Mackie added six aces, 20 kills and four assists; Laura Resnick had 11 kills; Katie Horrigan nine aces and 11 kills; and Sarah Dewey nine aces and seven kills.

Other teams in the tournament were Sandy Creek (8-2), APW, Indian River, General Brown and Thousand Islands.

The Lady Redskins stayed undefeated with two victories last week, including a five-set thriller over Oppenheim on Thursday, and a four set win at Center State Conference rival Sauquoit on Friday.

Against Oppenheim, Cooperstown rallied from two sets down and 10 points down in the final set to win the non-league match. CCS lost the first two sets, 23-25 and 24-26, before rallying to win, 25-21, 25-8 and 25-22.

They trailed 19-9 in the final set before rallying behind nine straight service winners from senior Ali Angerer.

"The seniors (Angerer, Resnick and Mackie) really stepped up their games," Jantzi said. "We showed some serious heart. Oppenheim was a very scrappy team. The only downside was we missed 20 serves in the game."

Armstrong set a school record for assists in a match with 27, and added seven kills and four aces. Mackie had six aces and seven kills and Resnick eight kills.

Cooperstown, 3-0 overall, won at Sauquoit on Friday as Armstrong had 18 more assists, and Katie Horrigan had a strong overall game with two aces, eight kills and assists and a block.

"We played well but missed 19 serves again," Jantzi said. "We need to keep that number under 10 a game. I've been very happy with our teamwork."

Cooperstown's home game against Mt. Markham, originally scheduled for Monday, was moved to Jan. 22.

CCS will host perennial power Canastota on Monday.
