Milford boys make statement
with lopsided win over CV-S

MILFORD - Looks like
there will be a race in the Tri-
Valley East after all.
The Milford boys basketball
team used a suffocating defense
and a big offensive night
from junior Brian Edelstein to
pummel Cherry Valley-Springfield,
55-29, in a big early season
game Tuesday night.
Edelstein had 22 points, almost
as many as the Patriots
managed in the entire game.
The teams entered the
game appearing to be headed
in opposite directions, with
Milford coming off a 44-23
thrashing in Laurens Friday
night, and the Patriots whipping
up on Schenevus, 68-29.
"There's no question that
this was a must win for us,"
said Milford head coach Frank
Spurchise. "If we're going to
compete on our side of the
league we have to win the
games in our division, especially
at home."
Milford built a nine-point
second quarter lead, 17-8, but
saw CV-S close the half on a
9-2 run, capped by Jason
Guernsey's steal and short
jumper in the final seconds.
But any momentum the Patriots
had quickly shifted back to
Milford when Edelstein hit a
runner in the lane and a threepoint
shot to open the second
half and push the lead back to
seven.
Edelstein hit another three
to give the Wildcats, 2-2 overall
and 1-1 in league play, a
10-point lead at 33-23 and the
rout was soon on.
"We held them to 12 points
in the second half and 29 in
the game, so we obviously ahd
a great defensive effort," Spurchise
said. "We also had nine
players in the scoring column
and it seemed like everyone
contributed. If we can get consistent
scoring from our big
men we'll be a tough team to
deal with."
CV-S leading scorer Anthony
Brant suffered through a
poor shooting night and was in
foul trouble throughout, picking
up his fourth foul with
seven seconds left in the third
quarter. Brant finished with a
season low four points while
point guard Jason Guernsey
led the team with eight
points.
Patriot head coach Jordan
Jaquay seemed to sense his
team's sluggishness early in
the game, calling two first
quarter timeouts and urging
his team to show some fire.
"We were flat," Jaquay
said. "We weren't rebounding
or playing defense like we normally
do."
Milford hosts Worcester
Friday night at 7 p.m. in another
big T-V East contest,
while the Patriots are off for a
week before hosting Oppenheim-
Ephrata on Tuesday.
