Cooperstown boys, girls both move to 5-0

Quinn Snyder had a coming out party last Thursday. Snyder's best game of his career, which included 18 points and 17 rebounds, helped the Cooperstown boys basketball team erase a 10-point second half deficit and beat previously undefeated Mt.

Markham, 59-53, in a terrific game last Thursday night. 'Quinn played like every possession was the last one," said Cooperstown head coach Dave Bertram, who saw his team improve to 5-0 on the season. 'He's gone over and beyond what I thought we'd get out of him. He's always been a great rebounder and he always hustles, but now he's starting to score, too."

Twelve of Snyder's points came in the first quarter, which Cooperstown led 21-20 despite four three-point baskets by the Mounties. But Markham took a four-point lead into halftime, and stretched the lead to 39-29 early in the third quarter.

'We started out the game playing a zone, and they were killing us with three's," Bertram said. 'In the second half, we played man-to-man defense, and our inside game started taking over."

The Redskins ended the quarter on a 14-4 run to tie the score at 43, and the fourth quarter was close throughout.

Snyder's tip-in of a missed shot with 1:50 remaining put the Redskins up 51-50, junior Brad Ashford added a free throw and 15-foot baseline jumper, and Archie Hendrick made four free throws in the final minute to seal the win.

Ashford finished with a career- high 17 points, including nine in the second quarter on two three-pointers and an oldfashioned three-point play.

'That was his best game by far," Bertram said of Ashford. 'He's a good offensive player, and hopefully this game will give him some confidence."

Hendrick finished with eight points and 12 rebounds, and Luke Tirrell had six points off the bench.

'This was a good win to build on," Bertram said. Cooperstown hosts Canastota on Friday night, and then hosts Sauquoit on Tuesday. Sauquoit, like Cooperstown, is undefeated in league play. 'That will be another big test for us," Bertram said.

The Redskins scheduled game at Waterville Monday was cancelled due to poor weather, and will be made up Jan. 18.

Coop girls remain undefeated

The Cooperstown girls basketball team narrowly avoided their first loss of the season with a 34-30 home win over Canastota on Tuesday.

Senior guard Katie Cring had 10 points as Canastota limited CCS's two main threats, center Samantha Fox and Jen Wehner, to nine points combined. Fox entered the game needing 19 points to become the girls all-time leading scorer at Cooperstown, but managed just two points.

'They were double-teaming her all night, and they did a good job taking her away," said Cooperstown head coach Mike Niles.

Senior Abby Hull and Wehner added seven points apiece for Cooperstown, which led by 12 points in the fourth quarter before Canastota rallied late. The Lady Redskins, 5-0, play at Sherburne-Earlville tonight, and at Waterville on Wednesday before hosting Herkimer Friday.
