Patriots get big road win

The Cherry Valley-Springfield boys basketball team used multiple defenses and the sharp shooting of senior Anthony Brant to start their Tri-Valley league season with a big road win, 59-41, over Morris Friday night.

Brant scored 20 points, and eight other Patriot players also got into the scoring column in the victory.

``We shot the ball pretty well, but I thought the defense was the key,’’ said CV-S boys basketball coach Jordan Jaquay.

Jaquay switched defenses often, changing from a 3-2 zone to a box-and-one to man-to-man, and it seemed to confuse the Mustangs, who had a hard time executing their offense.

``Their point guard is a sophomore, and I think he had a hard time adjusting to what we were doing,’’ Jaquay said.

Junior Mike Cagganello, who scored 15 points in a season-opening victory over Oppenheim on Tuesday, hit a three-point shot from the top of the key late in the first half as the Patriots opened up a 10-point halftime lead.

Brant, the only CV-S player in double figures, scored 13 of his 20 points in the first half.

The Patriots opened up a 14-point lead after three quarters, and scored the first four points of the fourth quarter for their biggest lead of the night, 50-32.

``I was pleased because Morris is supposed to be one of the better teams in our league, and we really stepped up our game,’’ Jaquay said.

Point guard Jason Guernsey had nine points, six assists and five steals, and Jake Hanlon added eight rebounds.

The Patriots’ non-league game at Gilboa Tuesday night was postponed until Wednesday.

CV-S won at Oppenheim, 54-46, on Tuesday in a game that was tied after three quarters. With the scored tied at 43-43, Guernsey attempted to throw a pass up-court to Brant, but the ball went straight into the basket for a 46-43 lead.

``We never looked back after that, that was the turning point,’’ Jaquay said.

CV-S hosts Schenevus Friday, and then play at Milford on Tuesday, Dec. 11.
