Cooperstown girls cruise to tourney win

The Cooperstown girls basketball team had too much height and too much depth for Hamilton in the championship game of Cooperstown’s second annual Preseason Tournament on Saturday night.

Even though senior center Samantha Fox didn’t have a particularly good shooting night, she was able to rebound most of her own misses and eventually put the ball in the basket as CCS took a 69-37 victory.

Fox, an all-tournament team selection, finished with a game-high 26 points, and is just 39 points away from the girls’ all-time scoring record at Cooperstown held by Dana Leonard with 1,089. Cooperstown’s game at Rome Catholic scheduled for Tuesday night was postponed to Dec. 15 because of snow. The Lady Redskins host Sauquoit Friday night and are at Canastota Tuesday, meaning Fox has a great chance to break the record in front of the home crowd.

Cooperstown head coach Mike Niles said when Fox breaks the record, the game will be stopped briefly and she will be awarded the game ball.

``We’ll do everything we can to have her break the record at home,’’ he said.

On Saturday, tournament MVP Jennifer Wehner keyed a 14-2 first-half run, with six straight points and three steals, as the Lady Redskins took a 35-23 lead into halftime. Cooperstown began the second half by scoring 18 of the first 20 points, including eight by Fox, and the rout was on.

``We executed much better in the second half,’’ Niles said. ``Defensively, our goal is to keep teams under double digits every quarter. In the second half, we did a better job and held them to just 14 points total.’’

Junior guard Laura Rowley scored 13 points off the bench, and has been playing well on the young season, Niles said.

``She’s been incredible,’’ he said. ``She really gives us a lift when she comes in.’’

In the opening game Friday night, CCS defeated Milford, 53-27. Katie Cring scored all 17 of her points in the first half, while Wehner and Fox were both in foul trouble. Milford bounced back to beat Morrisville, 46-27, in the consolation game Saturday afternoon, to improve to 2-3 on the season.

``Our losses have come to Davenport, Schenevus and Cooperstown, which are three pretty good teams,’’ said Milford head coach Jim Weir. ``We’ve had a tough schedule, but that’s going to help us. I’ve been seeing improvement, and we’ll continue to improve as the season goes on.’’

Brenna Campbell, who scored 16 points Saturday, was named to the all-tournament team for Milford.
