Volleyball wins Unatego tourney

UNATEGO _ The Cooperstown volleyball team began the season with a bang, winning the Unatego Tournament on Saturday.

CCS defeated Bainbridge-Guilford, 25-12 and 25-22, in the championship to win the title. They beat Walton, 19-25, 25-16 and 25-17 in the semifinal round.

Juniors Kim Armstrong and Katie Horrigan were both named to the all-tournament team. In four matches, Armstrong had 18 aces, 13 kills and 54 assists, while Horrigan had six aces and 27 kills.

``Armstrong is our setter,’’ said Cooperstown volleyball head coach Rich Jantzi. ``She knows how to control the game, sets all positions well, is fearless, tireless and probably one of the best setters in Class C, maybe Section III.’’

Seniors Kyle Mackie and Laura Resnick are the captains of the team this year.

``Laura and Kyle have been role players for the past two seasons and step into full starting roles,’’ Jantzi said. ``They have great experience and should be outstanding captains.’’

Mackie had five aces, 12 kills and nine assists in the Unatego Tournament, while Resnick had a team-high 18 kills.

`` We are a very young team this season, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t strong,’’ Jantzi said. ``To utilize our strengths (athleticism, serving and above-average hitting) we are switching to a 5-1 offense this year. Basically that means five hitters and one primary setter (Armstrong).’’

Horrigan had over 100 kills last season, and Resnick, Mackie and freshman Sara Dewey, the first freshman starter for Cooperstown since the 100-1-02 season, are all outstanding hitters as well, Jantzi said.

Jantzi said Laura Derouin, Kiersten Pikarsky, Eryn Bass and Sawyer Graham are also good hitters, and should see plenty of time to showcase their abilities.

``Mackie is our best defender, and will lead a group that is very young,’’ Jantzi said.

Jantzi said the team did not make preseason goals, but that anything less than 10 wins would be disappointing.

``On Saturday, we looked like we had been playing together for a long time,’’ he said. ``I think initially opposing teams will key on Katie, but when they see that I have four other hitters, and that Kim is a pretty good player herself, defenses will have to adjust to what we are doing for a change. We have a tough schedule, but it should be a fun season.’’

Cooperstown hosts Richfield Springs tonight (Thursday) in a non-league contest, and then play five straight matches away from home.
