CCS’s Fox closing in on record
Staff Report
ILION_ It’s bound to be an historic season for the Cooperstown girls basketball team this season.
And not just because they will return all five starters from last year’s 13-8 team when the season begins Tuesday at home against Frankfort-Schuyler.
Senior center Samantha Fox will likely become the all-time scoring leader in program history very early this season. Fox, a four-year starter, begins the season with 1,006 points, trailing all-time leading scorer Dana Leonard by 83 points.
Leonard, a 2006 graduate and former teammate of Fox’s, finished her career with 1,089 points, just two better than 1987 grad Dawn Berry. The three are the only girls players in Cooperstown history to accumulate 1,000 or more career points, while six boys have reached the 1,000-point plateau at Cooperstown.
The Lady Redskins play five of their first six games at home, giving Fox a good chance to break the milestone in front of her home fans. After Tuesday’s game, the Lady Redskins will host a tournament Friday and Saturday nights.
Also returning from last year is forward Jennifer Wehner, and guards Katie Cring, Jenny Potrikus and Abby Hull. Senior Lindsay Valentine, another guard, will see time off the bench.
