Hall secures Series artifacts

The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum has secured a number of items from the 2007 World Series between the Boston Red Sox and Colorado Rockies that will soon be displayed in Cooperstown until the conclusion of the 2008 baseball season.

Hall of Fame official Jeff Idelson attended the Series and secured many of the items.

Following the Red Sox four-game Series sweep of the Rockies for their second world championship in four years, nearly a dozen artifacts documenting the 103rd Fall Classic were donated to the Museum for incorporation into the exhibit "Autumn Glory: A Postseason Celebration" on the third floor. The items will go on display in approximately one week.

Among the artifacts collected by the Cooperstown shrine from the victorious Red Sox include: the cap worn by Series Most Valuable Player Mike Lowell (he batted .400 in the four games); the glove worn by closing pitcher Jonathan Papelbon; the cap worn by Game Four winner Jon Lester; the spikes worn by Game Three winner Daisuke Matsuzaka (first Japanese-born pitcher to start a World Series game); the bat used by Dustin Pedroia to hit a leadoff home run in Game One; rookie Jacoby Ellsbury’s bat from Game Three (when he hit two doubles in one inning); the road jersey worn by team captain Jason Varitek; and the warm-up jersey worn by manager Terry Francona.

Items received from the Colorado Rockies include veteran Todd Helton’s road jersey from Game One (Helton was playing in the first World Series of his All-Star career) and slugger Matt Holliday’s bat, which he used in the final two games of the Series.

This was the first World Series ever played in Colorado, and dirt from Coors Field was also secured for the Museum’s collection, as well as a baseball from the humidor at the ballpark.

Idelson said the team was more than willing to donate items to the museum.
