Coop girls win 5-1;
boys home on Friday

Here they go again.
The Cooperstown girls soccer
team began its quest for a
third straight Section Three
Class C title with a 5-1 victory
over Thousand Islands Tuesday
in Cooperstown.
CCS, the sixth seed, will
play either at third seed Utica-
Notre Dame on Friday, or host
Westmoreland Saturday.
Those two teams played
Wednesday night.
CCS senior Anna Kieler
scored the first three goals in
the final home game of her
four-year varsity career. Thousand
Islands scored just over
one minute into the game, but
Kieler tied the score when she
headed in a perfect cross from
Claire Petroskey with just
over 20 minutes left in the
half.
The Lady Redskins, 13-4-2,
dominated play for the remainder
of the half but did not
score. That changed quickly in
the second half when Kieler
scored again less than five
minutes in and made it 3-1 a
few minutes later. Another senior,
Lindsay Valentine,
scored the fourth goal on a laser
shot from 20 yards out
CCS added final goal with just
four seconds left when Laura
Derouin's shot glanced off a
Thousand Island's defender
and into the goal.
"We played a great passing
game," said CCs head coach
Jennifer Pindar. "Getting
Laura Rowley (who missed the
last nine games due to injury)
back was important and we're
healthy and ready to play."
Manlius-Pebble-Hill is the
top seed in Class C, as they
were last year when Cooperstown
defeated them in a penalty
kick shootout in the championship
game at Cortland.
The Cooperstown boys soccer
team earned the top seed
in the Section Three Class C
boys tournament, and will
host the winner of the Tully-
Bishop Grimes first round
game. Cooperstown is 13-2-1
on the season.
If they win Friday, they
will likely meet Frankfort-
Schuyler in a semifinal contest
on Tuesday or Wednesday. FS
is one of the teams which
beat the Redskins this year, 2-
2, in overtime. Cooperstown
won the first game between
the teams in overtime as well.
"This team has far exceeded
my expectations this season,"
said Cooperstown boys
coach Frank Miosek. "Having
the number one seed is nice,
but it also puts a bulls-eye on
our backs. We just need to continue
to play as a team and
we'll be fine."
