Clash of the Titans

The Cherry Valley-Springfield boys soccer team defeated every team on its schedule except for one this season.
They hope to change that on Saturday.
The Patriots, 15-1-1, and winners of the Tri-Valley East, will meet West champion Laurens for the second straight season in the T-V Championship Game at the Wright National Soccer Campus in Oneonta at 3 p.m. Saturday.
The Leopards, 13-0-1, won last year’s game, 4-0, and won at Cherry Valley 2-0 in the teams’ only regular season meeting.
That game was the only one in which CV-S, which outscored its opponents by a whopping 89-6 margin this season, was shut out.
``I think we started that first Laurens game with a defensive-minded attitude and we’re a better team when we play an offensive-minded game,’’ said CV-S head coach Terri Adams. ``That’s we want to do on Saturday. Play our short passing game and think offense.’’
The Patriots will likely have to be at their best on offense, as Laurens has allowed just four goals all season.
``We have a nice balance this year,’’ said Laurens head coach Dave Miller, in his 20th season at the helm. ``We don’t give up many goals and we’ve been able to put a few in the net, so we have a nice combination of offense and defense.’’
Much of CV-S’s offense starts with senior midfielder Jason Guernsey, who leads the team in both scoring and assists. The Patriots also got a lift this season from Dillon Anderson, who is originally from New Zealand and is a tough, physical defender and good passer.
``The first time we played them we tried to limit Guernsey’s and Anderson’s touches, and we’ll do the same on Saturday,’’ Miller said.
The Leopards are not only the defending Tri-Valley Champion, but also won a Section Four Class D title last year and advanced all the way to the state Final Four before losing in a penalty kick shootout. They are the top seed in the upcoming Section Four Class D tournament this year as well, while CV-S is the second seed.
``They’re a good team, no question,’’ Adams said. ``They have a great defense, and very good team speed. We need to really move the ball around and take advantage of our opportunities. Hopefully, the experience of playing in this game last year will help us this season.’’
Senior Miguel Short leads the Leopards in scoring with 14 goals, but Jesse Campbell, Joel Tirado and Adam Mish have all scored close to double figures as well.
``Campbell’s the guy that seems to do all the little things that help us win,’’ Miller said. ``He leads the team in assists, and he wins a lot of the 50/50 balls. He’s definitely one of our leaders.’’
The Leopards’ defensive unit has been stingy all season. Six-foot, four inch junior Aaron Laing is in his third year as a starter in goal, and Miller said his four other defensive starters ((Ryan Carr, Matt Struckle, Andrew Parsons and Nick Short) help to make Laing’s job easier by preventing open shots on goal.
CV-S’s Adams has preached a team style of play since taking over the coaching reins last year, and the players have seemingly received the message, as all 19 members of the team scored at least one goal this season, including goalkeeper Anthony Brant.
``I don’t pay attention to individual statistics and I don’t want them to either,’’ Adams said. ``It’s a team game and that’s our focus.’’
Miller said he shares that philosophy.
``I always tell the players I don’t care about any statistics but wins and losses,’’ he said. ``We play a similar style to Cherry Valley, and whichever team can execute better will win the game.’’
