Milford girls, CV-S boys receive second seeds

The Milford girls and Cherry Valley-Springfield boys soccer teams have earned second seeds in the upcoming Section Four Class D tournaments, which begin next week.

The boys tournament will get underway on Tuesday, Oct. 24 with four first round games, including Edmeston at Milford.

That game could be the final one for longtime Milford head coach Frank Spurchise, who is considering retirement after 30 years as varsity coach after this season.

Milford is the eighth seed after a regular season record of 9-6-2, while Edmeston is the ninth seed (9-7-1). The winner will play at top seed Laurens (13-0-1) at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27.

``We have a hard road in sectionals, but at the same time I’m very pleased with what we’ve been able to accomplish this season,’’ Spurchise said. ``We played a lot of state-ranked teams, and we’ve come a long way. At this point in the year, you have to win four games to win sectionals, so it doesn’t matter who you play to get there.’’

Spurchise said he is definitely retiring from teaching, but has yet to decide if this will be his final year of coaching.

Other first round games include 12th seed Andes at fifth seed Margaretville, 11th seed Windham at sixth seed Davenport, and 10th seed Gilbertsville-Mt. Upton at seventh seed Roxbury. Laurens, CV-S, third seed Hunter-Tannersville and fourth seed South Kortright received first round byes.

The winner of the G-MU-Roxbury game will play at Cherry Valley (15-1-1) on Oct. 27, also at 3:30 p.m. The semifinal games will be played on Halloween, at 3 p.m., and Class D title game will be played Saturday, Nov. 3 at the Soccer Hall of Fame at a time to be determined.

On the girls side, Milford, the defending Section Four Class D champion, has received a first round bye and will play the winner of the first round game between 10th seed Schenevus and seventh seed Hunter-Tannersville at home on Oct. 26 at 3:30 p.m.

Downsville, 16-0-1, is the top seed and lost to Milford in last year’s Class D title game.

Cherry Valley-Springfield received the fifth seed after an 11-4 regular season, and will host 12th seed Laurens (6-8-2) at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 23.

Other first round games include ninth seed South Kortright at eighth seed Franklin; 13th seed Windham at fourth seed Davenport; and 11th seed Gilboa-Conesville at sixth seed Jefferson. Besides Milford and Downsville, third seed Edmeston also received a first round bye.

Milford and Edmeston, who will meet in Saturday’s Tri-Valley Championship Game, could play again in a semifinal contest on Oct. 30 if both win their quarterfinal contests.

The girls Class D title game will also be played Nov. 3 at the Soccer Hall of Fame fields at a time to be determined.
