Girls Tri-Valley powers prepare for Round 4

Both the Milford and Edmeston girls soccer teams can use revenge as motivation as they prepare to meet in the Tri-Valley Championship Game for the fourth straight season Saturday at 1 p.m.
Milford has won the last three title game meetings at the Wright National Soccer Campus in Oneonta, but the Panthers exacted some payback with a 5-0 shellacking of their rivals in the teams’ only regular season meeting. That was the Lady Wildcats’ only loss in a 15-1 season.
``Certainly, we have a lot of incentive to play well Saturday,’’ said Milford head coach Lorin Campbell. ``I thought we played a horrible game the first time we played them, but if we come out and are clicking on all cylinders Saturday, I’m very confident we’ll be successful.’’
Edmeston, which finished 14-2-1 overall, has reason to be confident as well after outscoring its opponents 62-5 during the regular season. Sophomore Corey Hamm scored 21 goals, and 14 other players got into the scoring column, including eight with two or more goals.
``We’re a very well balanced team both offensively and defensively,’’ said Edmeston coach Melanie Mumbolo. ``We’re not looking back at the last three title games, we’re looking forward. We played a great game the last time we played them, and we just want to play at that level again.’’
Campbell said his team has been on a roll since losing to Edmeston, outscoring its opponents 52-3 and recording seven shutouts. Ironically, an injury to leading scorer and team leader Brenna Campbell spurred the team in a new direction.
``With Brenna out, different girls had to step up and they did,’’ Campbell said. ``The difference in our team now compared to the Edmeston game is just tremendous.’’
Lorin said Brenna is almost completely healed from an ankle injury that limited her playing time for the second half of the season.
Even so, the senior midfielder still scored a team-high 34 goals to go along with 16 assists, while fellow senior Maria Arnot added 31 goals and 14 assists. Junior Emily Brigham is third on the team in scoring with 13 goals and 10 assists.
Edmeston, the fourth ranked team in Class D in the latest state rankings, lost only to Cincinnatus and McGraw on back-to-back days in the Hall of Fame Cup in September.
The Panthers employ a two-goalie system with SueEllyn Tophoven and Susanna Johnson usually splitting time in goal during games.
``One usually plays the first half and the other the second half,’’ Mumbolo said. ``It’s unusual, but the girls enjoy it and since we have two good goalies it works for us.’’
