The Cooperstown boys soccer team did not avenge their only loss of the season Tuesday at Poland, but they did make a statement.
The Redskins trailed the Class D power 2-0 in the second half, but goals by Ryan Huggins and Chris Gulotta forged a tie and kept CCS’s unbeaten streak alive at 12 games. Poland won the season-opener for both teams, 1-0, on Sept. 4.
``We showed a lot of heart to come back,’’ said CCS soccer coach Frank Miosek.
The Redskins ran their win streak to 11 straight games on Saturday with a 4-0 victory over host Davenport in the first round of the Chic Walshe Tournament.
The win avenged a loss to the Wildcats in last year’s tournament final. Gulotta, a senior, scored two goals and assisted another in the win.
Ryan Davine scored a goal 51 seconds into a 4-2 home win over Mt. Markham on Friday as the Redskins stayed unbeaten in Center State Conference play with the win.
``We opened up a 3-0 lead and I rested some of the starters because we had a game the next day,’’ Miosek said. ``But Mt. Markham scored two goals in three and a half minutes to close to 3-2 and I had to put the starters back in.’’
Shortly after, Gulotta was awarded a penalty kick after being fouled in the goalie box, and converted to put the game away.
Cooperstown has two tough games this week, beginning today (Thursday) when they host Frankfort-Schuyler, who own a 12-3 record, and continuing Saturday when they play 9-2-1 South Kortright in the championship of the Walshe Tournament at 2 p.m. Today’s game is the final regular season home game for the Redskins.
``We’re going to get tested in both those games, but that’s good at this time of year,’’ Miosek said. ``Frankfort is a crossover game, but they are a C school we could see again in sectionals.’’
Against Davenport, Cooperstown scored three second half goals to break open a 1-0 game. Gulotta and Jon Birch scored early in the second half, and Drew Lierheimer finished the scoring.
The Cooperstown girls soccer team remained perfect in Center State Conference play with a 1-0 win over Sherburne Thursday.
The game was delayed at the start by thunder, and had to be called because of darkness about 10 minutes into the second half.
Junior Laura Rowley, who returned from a knee injury, assisted Anna Kieler with the game’s only goal. Cooperstown is 6-0 in league play and 9-3 overall. The Lady Redskins host Canastota Friday.
