Milford wins with Campbell on sideline

CHERRY VALLEY _ With their star player on the bench, the Milford girls soccer team still found a way to complete a 3-0 win at Cherry Valley on Monday, all but clinching a fourth straight Tri-Valley East title in the process.

Leading scorer and field general Brenna Campbell re-injured an already sore ankle late in the first half of Monday’s game, and sat out the rest of the game. The Lady Wildcats had a 1-0 halftime lead thanks to an early goal from Maria Arnot, and dominated the second half.

``Sometimes having her out can turn out to be a good thing because someone else has to step up,’’ said Milford head coach Lorin Campbell. ``I’ve moved a lot of girls around this year and out of their comfort zones, and maybe that will help down the line.’’

Campbell moved senior forward Arnot, the team’s second leading scorer, to a defensive halfback position for the first time in her five year career.

``She did a great job back there,’’ Campbell said.

Junior Emily Brigham picked up the scoring slack, netting two second half goals which were set up by corner corner kicks. Brigham has nine goals this season, six of them against CV-S, including four in a 9-0 win at Milford in September.

``I thought we dominated the first half after their goal, but after halftime we didn’t get that same spark back,’’ said CV-S head coach Amy Garretson. ``I don’t think the girls will hang their heads, they played a great game.’’

With the win, Milford improved to 13-1 overall, and 8-1 in Tri-Valley play. They have just two league games remaining, including tonight’s final regular season home game of the season against Worcester. Milford’s 10 seniors will be honored before the game.

The Lady Patriots, who host Schenevus today (Thursday) are 6-2 in league play, but still have games at Tri-Valley West leading Edmeston and at Worcester.

``We have a tough schedule, but anything can happen and we just have to play it out,’’ Garretson said of her team’s chances to win the East.

Lorin Campbell said he expects Brenna, his daughter, to play on Thursday.

``I think she’d kill me if I didn’t let her play,’’ he said. ``After Thursday, we have eight days off before our next game, so I’m hoping to get her through one more game and then she can rest.’’

Milford completes its regular season league schedule at Franklin Oct. 12, and the Tri-Valley Championship Game is set for Oct. 20 at the Wright National Soccer Campus in Oneonta. Milford has defeated Edmeston in the last three T-V title games, and they appear headed for a fourth straight meeting this season.

{"CC Body Text"/}MILFORD _ The Cherry Valley-Springfield boys soccer team retained their tenuous hold on first place in the Tri-Valley East with a 2-2 tie at Milford Monday afternoon.

CV-S trailed 1-0 at halftime, but Jordan Carter and Mike Cagganello scored second half goals and the Patriots seemed on their way to victory when Drew Jones scored for Milford with nine seconds remaining to forge the tie.

``It was a wonderful way for us to end the game,’’ said Milford head coach Frank Spurchise. ``I thought we dominated the last 10 minutes, and the kids deserved a positive outcome.’’

The Patriots have a half game lead over the Wildcats with three league games remaining, including at Schenevus today. CV-S is 6-1-1 in T-V play, while Milford is 5-2-1. The Patriots host Edmeston Tuesday, and Milford ends their league season by hosting Edmeston next Friday. The Patriots also host Worcester on Oct. 11.

``We play at Worcester Thursday, and we have to take care of our own business first,’’ Spurchise said. ``The important thing is we’re playing well.’’

Both Milford and CV-S entered the game off impressive wins Saturday. Milford beat Class A Monticello 1-0, while the Patriots hammered state ranked Margaretville, 5-0.

CV-S won the East last year, losing to Laurens in the T-V title game.
