Cooperstown boys, girls unbeaten in league play

The Cooperstown boys soccer team has won eight straight games and are in first place in the Center State Conference, facts that amaze head coach Frank Miosek.
``We lost most of our offense from last year so I didn’t know what to expect this season,’’ Miosek said after his team won at Waterville, 2-0, on Tuesday. ``But this team, and I emphasize team, has bought into our system and do all the little things right it takes to be successful.’’
The Redskins have received scoring from nine different players during their eight game win streak, including a team-high seven from Ryan Huggins, who didn’t score a single goal last season.
Three newcomers to the defense _ stopper back Drew Lierheimer, sweeper Luke Tirrell and goalkeeper Mac Curran _ and returning three-year starter Quinn Snyder have solidifed the defensive unit.
``It’s been a pleasant surprise, but at the same time we can’t let our guard down because we’re not going to surprise anyone now,’’ Miosek said.
The Redskins jumped on league rival Sherburne at home on Friday, scoring three goals in the first half, including one in the first two minutes, in a 3-0 victory.
``That was probably our best performance of the year,’’ Miosek said. ``Our passing was very sharp against a very good team.’’
On Saturday, Cooperstown traveled to Edmeston for a non-league contest, and used three second-half goals to win, 4-1.
``We were clicking on all cylinders in the second half and just put the game away,’’ Miosek said.
The Redskins, 8-1 overall and 6-0 in league play, hosted Canastota last night, and are home again on Friday when they meet Mt. Markham in a league contest. On Saturday, CCS will play Davenport at 4 p.m. in the first round of the Davenport Tournament. South Kortright and Worcester will meet in the other first round game, and the consolation and final will be played Saturday, Oct. 6.

in league
{"CC Body Text"/}It’s probably a good thing the Cooperstown girls soccer team is not in the Tri-Valley league.
For the second consecutive Saturday, the Lady Redskins lost to a member of the T-V at home, losing to Edmeston 1-0 in overtime last Saturday, after a 2-1 loss to Milford the week before.
But more importantly, Cooperstown did defeat second place Sauquoit, 2-0, at home on Friday and Waterville, 1-0 Tuesday to remain in first place in the Center State Conference. They are the only undefeated team in the CSC, but have lost three non-league games, the other coming to Herkimer and have an 8-3 overall record and 5-0 league mark.
Junior midfielder Laura Rowley scored the first goal against Sauquoit just three minutes into the game, but shortly afterward collided with the goalkeeper and strained a ligament in her knee. She will be out until Oct. 1, according to head coach Jennifer Pindar.
``With Laura out we moved some girls around against Edmeston, and I thought both teams played a great game,’’ Pindar said. ``We had three good chances to score, but just couldn’t finish.’’
Edmeston, which is in first place in the T-V West, scored in the first 10 minute overtime with just over a minute remaining.
Against Sauquoit, senior Anna Kieler scored the second goal nine minutes into the game on a penalty kick after a Sauquoit player was called for a hand ball in the goalie box. Cooperstown is now a game and a half in front of Sauquoit in their division of the Center State Conference.
Kieler and Rowley both had two goals in a 6-0 win at Frankfort-Schuyler last Wednesday. Against Waterville on Tuesday, junior Claire Petroskey scored the lone goal midway through the second half on an assist from Jenny Potrikus. Cooperstown goalie Jen Wehner made 14 saves to preserve the shutout.
Cooperstown hosts Sherburne-Earlville today.
