ADIRONDACK _ The young Cooperstown football team was simply overmatched at Adirondack on Saturday, losing a 48-7 decision.
``They are a big, physical football team and there wasn’t much we were going to do against them,’’ said Cooperstown head coach Steve Pugliese. ``I think that’s the best team in our league, and I’d be surprised if they lose a game all season.’’
The 0-2 Redskins return home on Saturday for a 2 p.m. non-league game against Delhi at Lambert Field.
``We had a lot of kids who gave a good effort against Adirondack, and we had others who were intimidated and didn’t play well,’’ Pugliese said. ``We need to find some leaders on this team that won’t let that happen.’’
Cooperstown’s lone score in the contest came early in the fourth quarter, when sophomore quarterback Tyler Hoke connected with senior Griffin Soule on a 35-yard scoring pass. It was Hoke’s second scoring pass of the season.
Pugliese said Tyler Combs a senior captain, led the team in tackles, and running back R.J. Alton and linemen Dan Senif and Jed Rowley also played well Saturday.
Delhi, 1-1, defeated Hancock 28-8 on Saturday.
``They are a young team but they have a coach (Dave Kelly) who has been there for 35 years and will have his team ready to play,’’ Pugliese said of Delhi. ``I’m expecting an intense game.’’
Pugliese said his team in need of a victory to right the ship after Saturday’s discouraging loss.
``We’re young, but we have talent on this team,’’ he said. ``We need a win to start believing again. I’m sure they’re doubting themselves a little and our fans are doubting. But don’t give up on this football team yet.’’
