Coop boys get spark from freshman Chase

By ERIC AHLQVIST

It was the kind of victory that can turn a season around.

Cooperstown freshman Jake Chase scored two goals, including the game-winner with 15 seconds left in the second sudden death overtime, to lead the boys soccer team to a come-from-behind, 3-2 home win over Waterville on Monday afternoon.

Cooperstown trailed 2-0 early in the first half of what head coach Frank Miosek described as a poor one for his team.

``We were in a complete funk,’’ Miosek said. ``We just weren’t doing anything right tactically.’’

The tide began to turn when Cooperstown’s Ryan Huggins was fouled inside Waterville’s goalie box late in the first half, resulting in a penalty kick. Senior Quinn Snyder converted to cut the lead in half, 2-1.

The score remained that way until early in the second half, when Chase scored the first of his two goals off a cross from Huggins.

``Chase was at the back post, right where he is supposed to be, and Huggins made a nice feed,’’ Miosek said.

Cooperstown continued to threaten offensively, but Waterville goalkeeper Caleb Maniano (nine saves) made one outstanding save in regulation and two more in overtime to preserve the tie. Cooperstown goalie Mac Curran had 10 saves.

``We started winning the 50/50 balls and both teams played their starters throughout so it became a game of endurance,’’ Miosek said. ``We got great hustle from Bobby Bauer, Drew Lierheimer and Luke Tirrell.’’

Miosek also had special words of praise for Ryan Davine, who ``played every minute and has improved both tactically and physically from last year.’’

The winning goal was set up when Huggins was fouled with about 15 seconds remaining.

``He was hurt on the play, so we had time to set up a play for the restart,’’ Miosek said. ``Snyder saw an opening opposite what we had set up and fed the ball to Chase, who put it away.’’

Miosek said although Chase is a freshman, he does all the little things in the game correctly.

``He knows tactics and he knows positioning which he needs to because he’s smaller,’’ Miosek said.

Chase also scored a goal in Cooperstown’s 2-0 win at Milford Friday in a non-league contest.

``We did a lot of things right as a team against Milford,’’ Miosek said. ``Our goalie (Curran) had an outstanding game and I was very happy with the way we played.’’

Cooperstown, 2-1 overall and 1-0 in Center State Conference play, traveled to Canastota last night (Wednesday) and play at always tough Mt. Markham on Friday.
