Cooperstown boys lose opener, 1-0

The Cooperstown boys soccer
team lost its season opener
to Poland Tuesday, 1-0, but
CCS head coach Frank Miosek
wasn't unhappy with his
team's performance.
"Poland is a good team, and
for the first game I thought we
were impressive from a defensive
aspect," Miosek said. "Offensively,
we need to improve
our approach."
Poland is a perennial Class
D power, and lost in the Section
Four Class D finals in a
shootout last season. They
took a 1-0 lead midway
through the first half when Ed
Rosenburgh blasted a shot
from the middle of the field
which got over the head of
CCS goalkeeper Mac Curran.
That proved to be the only
shot which got past Curran,
who made 14 saves, all day.
"There was nothing he
could do, and he played a great
game for us," Miosek said of
Curran, who was making his
first varsity start in goal. "He's
very athletic and he's going to
be solid for us."
Curran has been working
with CCS graduate Lucas
Spencer, a standout goalie
during his playing days. Spencer
and Matt Grady, another
CCS garduate and former
player, are both volunteer
coaches this season.
"Luke has been giving Mac
tactical advice, and I think has
made a big difference for him,"
Miosek said.
Shortly after Poland's goal,
Cooperstown had its best
chance to score when Chris
Gulotta crossed a pass to foreign
exchange studernt Marcos
Soares, but his shot from
15 yards out his the crossbar
and bounded away.
"We experimented in the
second half with a new kind of
offense, but it didn't really
work well," Miosek said. "Poland
had the better of the play
in the second half."
Cooperstown will travel to
Milford on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
for another non-leage contest.
The Cooperstown girls soccer
team opened their season
last weekend in the Lowville
Tournament, defeating the
hosts 4-1 in the opener and
losing to rival Herkimer, 1-0,
in the final on Saturday.
Cooperstown defeated Herkimer
three times in 2005, including
the Section Three
Class C final, before the teams
split a pair of hotly contested
games last year.
"We'll play them twice more
this season, and they're always
good games," said CCS
head coach Jennifer Pindar.
Against Lowville, Anna
Kieler, last year's leading
scorer, had two goals, and junior
midfielder Laura Rolwey
also tallied twice. Lindsay Valetine
and Jenny Potrikus
added assists.
In the championship game,
Herkimer's Brooke Nasypany
scored 10 minutes into the
first half for what proved to be
the winning margin.
"We had a few good opportunities
to score but just
couldn't get it in the net," Pindar
said. "Both teams played
well."
Cooperstown, 1-1, began
Center State Conference
league play at Sherburne-
Earlville on Wednesday, and
host Mt. Markham on Sept.
11.
