Coop girls aim for third Class C crown

By ERIC AHLQVIST

If twice is nice, three times must be even better.

That may be the motto of the Cooperstown girls soccer team this season as they pursue a third straight Section Three Class C title this fall. The Lady Redskins beat Manlius-Pebble Hill in a sudden death penalty kick shootout for the title last year, after beating Herkimer in four overtimes for the C title game the previous season. Cooperstown advanced to the state Final Four in 2005, and lost in the state quarterfinals to Candor, 3-0, last season.

While the team lost four starters, including all-state defender Rachael Kuch and second leading scorer Lindsay Soraci to graduation, they should have more than enough talent returning to make a run at a three-peat.

First team all-state selection Anna Kieler returns for her senior season after scoring 20 goals and adding three assists in 2006. A four-year starter, Kieler has 43 career goals and is one of four senior captains along with defender Kyle Mackie, and midfielders Lindsay Valentine and Jenny Potrikus. Potrikus scored the winning penalty kick in the Class C title game at Cortland a year ago, while Kieler, Mackie and Valentine were all first team Center State Conference All Stars.

Junior midfielder Laura Rowley, who scored the game-winning goal against Herkimer in the 2005 title game, is the second leading returning scorer from last year. Valentine and junior striker Claire Petroskey should also contribute offensively this season.

While Cooperstown lost Kuch and fellow defender Lisa Covert to graduation, athletic 6’2’’ junior Jen Wehner returns in goal. Abby hull is Covert, while either Laura Resnick or Laura Derouin will be replacing Kuch at stopper, Pindar said.

``We are hoping to have a great season,’’ said CCS head coach Jennifer Pindar, who has accumulated a 78-19-7 record in her first five years. "The majority of our team is returning from last year and the incoming players from the junior varsity squad has made our team stronger.’’

After an undefeated regular season in 2005, the Lady Redskins went 14-5-4 a year ago. They will begin the season Friday at the Lowville Tournament when they play the hosts at 11 a.m. The final is 7 p.m. Saturday, while the consolation game is set for 5 p.m. CCS travels to Sherburne-Earlville on Sept. 5 and host Mt. Markham Sept. 11 in the home opener.

``We went to Team Camp in Erie, Pa. in the beginning of August which gave us a jump to our season,’’ Pindar added. ``We are excited and ready to play. The potential is there for another successful season, and we have been working hard during preseason.’’
