Milford girls return for what should be memorable season

MILFORD_With all but one starter returning from the most successful season in program history, it will be mostly status quo for Milford girls soccer coach Lorin Campbell and the team this season.
Right coach? Wrong.
``Teams will see a totally different look from us this year,’’ said Campbell, who guided the team to its first Section Four Class D crown last year before losing in a state quarterfinal contest to McGraw. ``We’ve got more depth and flexibility than I’ve had in at least two years.’’
The main reason for the team’s depth is participation in an under-17 spring league, which helped the younger players develop quickly, Campbell said.
``Playing on that team made a world of difference for my younger players,’’ Campbell said. ``They’ve matured very quickly and that will enable me to move some players around this season.’’
That’s bad news for the rest of the Tri-Valley as they try and stop Milford’s run of three straight Tri-Valley Championship titles. The Lady Wildcats, 19-2-2 a year ago, return their two big offensive weapons in seniors Brenna Campbell and Maria Arnot. Campbell is a midfielder and the main decision maker on offense, while the speedy Arnot has a knack for getting open and finding the net.
Campbell scored a school record 33 goals and added 17 assists last year, while Arnot had 20 goals and 15 assists. Arnot has 86 career goals, a school record, while Campbell is right behind with 80 career goals. Junior Emily Brigham, who scored the game-winning goal in the Section Four Class D title game against Davenport last year, and a talented foursome of freshmen whom Campbell described as very promising, will add to Milford’s offensive attack.
Sophomore Chandler Prouty, who scored the team’s lone goal in the 2-1 overtime state quarterfinal loss to McGraw last November, will move to a defensive position as will Katie Yerdon, who was a midfielder and striker last season. After Milford lost to McGraw last year, Campbell said he didn’t like the feeling of getting to state competition and not being able to finish straong because of a lack of depth.
``Playing in the spring league should help us fix that prolem this year, and should also put us in better position for the years to come,’’ Campbell said.
The only loss to graduation was sweeper Corrine Ketzlick, but it was a big one. Ketzlick was the leader of the defensive unit and a first team Tri-Valley All Star last year. She will be replaced by freshman Emily Brennan, a defensive starter last year as an eighth grader.
Milford starting goalkeeper Chynna Pitlock, a sophomore, has also decided not to play this season, leaving the goalkeeping duties to senior Rachel Schultes, a five-year player. The Lady Wildcats begin the season Wednesday, Aug. 29 at home against Margaretville, and then host Laurens Sept. 4. They will travel to defending Class C champion Cooperstown on Sept. 14 for an interesting non-league contest.
``It’s my job to make sure we’re focused and not looking ahead to the end of the season,’’ Lorin Campbell said. ``I’m constantly reminding them that everyone is gunning for them because they’ve been winning, and that if they don’t show up to play they’ll get beat. I don’t think focus will be a problem.’’
