Hall sets weekend
attendance record
Staff Report
The National Baseball Hall
of Fame shattered its previous
four-day Hall of Fame Weekend
attendance total, drawing
36,996 fans to the museum
Friday through Monday.
In addition to the approximately
75,000 who attended
Sunday’s induction ceremony,
and the record 717,000 fans
who went to major league
baseball games on Saturday,
the game of baseball has never
been stronger, said Hall of
Fame president Dale Petroskey.
"What we saw in Cooperstown
this weekend is just a
microcosm of the game as a
whole," Petroskey said. "The
success of this weekend was a
total community effort. If I
had a dime for all the people
who told me everyone was
wonderful to them and they
couldn’t wait to come back, it
would add up to a lot of money."
The Hall set an all-time
one-day record on Saturday
with 14,491 visitors, and had
their third highest one-day total
on Sunday with 9,664 passing
through the turnstiles.
The only other day in museum
history with higher attendance
was July 29, 1995, when
9,700 fans passed through the
museum during Induction
weekend for Mike Schmidt
and Richie Ashburn.
Petroskey said much of the
success of Hall of Fame weekend
can be traced to chairman
Jane Forbes Clark, and Kim
Bennett, who is the year-round
coordinator of the museum’s
biggest weekend.
"Jane’s attention to detail
really helps everything run
smoothly," Petroskey said.
"And Kim handles all details
great and small."
The 2008 Induction Ceremony
will be held on Sunday,
July 27.
