Pony League wins pair of games
The Cooperstown Pony Hawkeyes won two league games last week, defeating Cherry Valley by a score of 11-5, and outscoring Milford 21-9.
In Wednesday’s game at Cherry Valley, Jarrett Hotaling, newcomer Phil Britt and Ryan Bennett combined for nine strikeouts while holding CV to five runs.
Hotaling went 4-for-4 with two doubles and Molly Pearlman went 2-for-2. Kevin Huggins, Ryan Bennett and James McArdle all contributed singles.
Returning to Doubleday Field to play Milford on Thursday, the Hawkeyes were held scoreless in the first two innings, but then scored 21 runs in the next four frames, while the visitors scored three in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Cooperstown had 13 hits.
Hotaling had a triple and a single, and James McArdle had a triple; Ryan Bennett a double and a single; Britt and Jeremiah Ford two singles each; and Kevin Huggins, Darren Van Deusen, William Murphy, and Jimmy Donley each had singles.
Milford’s Devin Valtin led his team with a triple, double and single, and Gideon Powers, Cameron Dutcher, Terrence Harrison and CJ Smith each contributed singles. Trevor Kosturack caught an outstanding game for Milford, according to the Cooperstown coaching staff. Hotaling got the win for Cooperstown, and he and Bennett combined for nine strikeouts.
Hotaling has four wins for the Hawkeyes and Bennett has been the consistent closer. Molly Pearlman, who was injured for the game against Milford, leads the team at the plate batting .700 with two doubles, while Hotaling is hitting .563 with two home runs, two triples and three doubles.
