Tournament named for 'Rayzor' Smith
Staff Report
The team of Jim Johnson and Eric Hage won the inaugural Ray (Rayzor) Smith horseshoe tournament at the Mohican Club in Cooperstown earlier this month.
Smith, a lifetime Cooperstown resident, died in mid-May.
``He was a great man and a great Mohican,’’ said fellow Mohican Club member and former horseshoe partner John Lambert.
In all, 16 people participated in the tournament, which will be an annual event, and $250 was raised for the Rayzor Smith Memorial Scholarship given at Cooperstown High School’s graduation ceremony.
The Mohican Club is a men’s social club on Main Street, and dates back to 1894.
Smith was a standout athlete at Cooperstown and was co-captin of the football team his senior year, and continued his athletic feats until late in life.
He was the first bowler at the Clark Sports Center to have a better than .200 average, was at one time an assistant golf pro at Leatherstocking Golf Course.
He was also an ardent fan of CCS sports. He was a past president of the Cooperstown Booster Club and CCS Alumni Association.
Lambert said so many people attended Smith’s funeral earlier this month that about 100 people were standing in the street.
``He’ll be missed,’’ Lambert said.
