Coop baseball has 5 first team All Stars
Staff Report
The Section Three Class C champion Cooperstown baseball team landed five players on the Center State Conference First Team All Star squad, CCS baseball coach Frank Miosek said.
Junior Philip Pohl and seniors Frank Petroskey, Luke Banner, Sean Gates and Zack Sittler all made the first team, while senior Brian Segit and freshman Kyle Liner were honorable mention selections.
The Redskins won Division II of the Center State Conference before winning four sectional games to win the Class C title.
They lost a 4-3 heartbreaker to Oxford in a state quarterfinal contest to finish the season 19-4.
Pohl was the Most Valuable Player of the CSC last season, and had an even better year this year. He had a .466 batting average, and broke school records in home runs in a season with five, RBIs in a season with 39 and stolen bases in a season with 41. Reid Nagelschmidt held the previous record with 3 home runs in the 1995 season, Petroskey set the RBI record last year with 34, and Stewart Wright had the previous stolen base record with 29.
Pohl, normally a catcher, also emerged as a star pitcher this season, winning four games and losing just one while striking out 55 batters in just 35 innings pitched. Pohl had complete game wins in the sectional quarterfinals and the Class C final, which was a two-hit shutout. The MVP of the CSC for the 2007 season has not yet been named.
Petroskey, a shortstop headed to play Division One baseball at the University of Vermont in the fall, had a team-leading .550 batting average with 26 RBIs, 21 stolen bases and 13 doubles, a new school record. Pohl set the previous record of 12 last season, and added another 12 this season.
Petroskey, who had a team-beat 38 hits this year, was the first player in Cooperstown baseball history to accumulate 100 career hits, and finished with 113. Nagelschmist had 93 career hits from 1993-95, and Bud Lippitt had 92 career hits from 1992-95.
Leadoff man Banner had a .425 batting average this season to go along with a team-leading .629 on base percentage. He added 14 RBIs, two home runs and 11 stolen bases. Banner also accumulated a 6-1 pitching record with 37 strikeouts on the season.
Sittler had seven doubles, 11 stolen bases and 15 RBIs and was also 4-0 on the mound. Gates was a defensive specialist at first base and had four stolen bases and six runs batted in. Liner hit .328 with five doubles and 18 RBIs, while Segit had three home runs and was an above average centerfielder.
