Joe Horrigan wins tourney
Staff Report
OLD FORGE Cooperstown
senior Joe Horrigan
won the end-of-the-year Center
State Conference tournament
in dramatic fashion on
Thursday, hitting what head
coach Dave Peplinski described
as a "miraculous bunker
shot" on the fifth sudden
victory playoff hole.
Fifty players from 20 CSC
schools qualified to play in the
tournament, including four
from Cooperstown Horrigan,
Gavin Harris, Tom Redding
and Patrick Horrigan.
Horrigan finished the 18
holes at Thendara Golf Course
in Old Forge with a 75, which
left him in a first place tie with
Westmoreland's Taylor Brockway.
The two golfers tied the
first four holes, and Horrigan
looked to be in trouble on the
fifth hole when he hit into a
bunker.
"The pin was at the top of a
hill, and Joe was about 25
yards out and stuck it four feet
from the hole," Peplinski said.
"A lot of the other golfers were
following the two of them
around, and the place just
erupted in applause after he
hit that shot."
Horrigan made his par putt
and Brockway bogeyed to give
Horrigan the title.
"It was a great way to end
the season and for Joe to end
his career," Peplinski added.
Patrick Horrigan shot an
80, Redding an 86 and Harris
an 89 in the tournament for
Cooperstown, which won a
Section Three Class C title
and finished the regular season
undefeated this spring.
