CV-S track teams win
Section 4 titles

DELHI - Sometimes in
sports, things work out just
the way they should.
After years of placing second
to Odessa-Montour at the
Section Four Class D meet,
the Cherry Valley-Springfield
girls track team finally caught
up last Thursday at Delhi
Tech.
Trailing by four points
heading to the final event, the
1,600 relay, the Lady Patriots
needed a win to have any shot
at winning sectionals.
The team of eighth grader
Joslyn Mabie and seniors
Heather Titus, Laura Kroon
and anchor leg Kim Daley
turned in their best time of the
year, and Odessa-Montour finished
third, leaving the teams
tied for first and taking a
share of the Section Four title
home.
"They've dominated, so a
tie is like a win for us, especially
since we were trailing
heading to that final meet,"
said CV-S track coach Jordan
Jaquay. "Not only was that
our best time of the year, but
the best time in many seasons
at CV-S. They were flying."
Jaquay said he was especially
happy for his seniors,
many of whom have been on
the team for five or six years.
As a seventh grader, Daley
ran the anchor leg of the 4x400
to help CV-S win a Tri-Valley
Championship.
"She came into the program
a winner, and leaves a winner,"
Jaquay said. "That is a
perfect way for her to end her
career."
Freshman Addy Schneider
also had a big day, winning
the long jump (15-6 1/2); taking
third in the 100; and fourth
in both the 200 and triple
jump. Besides being on the
winning 1,600 relay team,
Kroon also took second in the
high jump, fourth in the 400
and fifth in the triple jump.
Megan Shirey set a school
record in winning the steeplechase
(8:24.30); Kyla Misiewicz
was second in the pole
vault; Jess Guido third in the
discus; Titus was third in both
hurdle events; and Jenny
Bowen third in the 3,00 and
fourth in the steeplechase.
"I couldn't have asked any
more out of my girls," Jaquay
said. "Everyone performed really
well."
Schneider (100, long.
Jump); Mabie (400); Bowen
(3,000); Shirey (steeplechase);
Titus (both hurdles); Kroon
(high jump) and Guido (discus)
all qualified to compete at
Thursday's 4 p.m. state qualifier
in Union Endicott.
Boys win third straight
section title
There was not as much drama
on the boys' side, as CV-S
won its third straight Section
Four title in convincing fashion,
accumulating 143 points,
55 better than second place
Laurens.
"We held or exceeded our
seeds in every event, so again
it was a complete team effort,"
Jaquay said. "Winning three
straight league (Tri-Valley)
and sectional titles is a very
significant accomplishment.
These guys should be proud of
that."
Senior Tom Shukis won individual
sectional titles in
both the 800 (2:04.50) and pole
vault (12 feet) and the 1,600
relay team of Weston Johnson,
Scott VanDerkrake, Tom Shukis
and Brian Sutton was also
victorious.
"We also took a lot of second
places, which really made
a big difference," Jaquay said.
Junior Jason Guernsey set
a school record of 4:43.70 while
placing second in the 1,600;
and Sutton also set a school
record of 52.50 in placing second
in the 400.
Stamford's Justin Harmon
set a Tri-Valley record with a
winning time of 50.6 in the
400.
Sutton was also second in
the 200, while VanDerkrake
was second in the 100.
Milford's Danny Baxter
won three individual events,
including the triple jump and
both hurdle events for fourth
place Milford (75 points). It
was the second straight year
that Baxter, a junior, won
three sectional titles.
Baxter will head to the
state qualifier at U-E on
Thursday, along with a slew of
Patriot athletes.
"We'd like to try and continue
improving our times and
maybe set some school records,"
Jaquay said of the state
qualifier. "That would be a
great way to end the season."
