MORRISVILLE - Don
Howard's final meet as the
Cooperstown boys track coach
didn't end in victory Saturday,
but that doesn't mean it was a
disappointment.
"I'm ecstatic," Howard said
after his team won six events
at the Section Three Class C-1
meet. "We had a number of
personal bests and great performances,
it just happens
Tully was not going to be beat
on that day."
Howard said Tully scored
multiple points in almost every
event, and although his
team did all it could, they
could not match Tully's depth.
"We competed really, really
well but Tully just kept scoring,"
Howard said. "Sometimes,
you just have to tip your
cap."
Cooperstown senior Stephen
Scrafford set a school record
in the 1,600 meter run
with a time of four minutes,
23.52 seconds. Scrafford broke
the old record set by Josh Edmonds
just last year. Scrafford
also won the 3,200 and the
3,000 steeplechase that was
Thursday.
Scrafford will run in the
800 at the open qualifier at Cicero-
North Syracuse on Thursday.
Howard said Scrafford has
two goals for the event, to set
the school record and qualify
for states.
"If he does both, great,"
Howard said. "But I know he'd
like to get one or the other."
The Redskins had three
other individual victories on
Saturday, including Greg Sorin
in the 100; Mike Croft in
the 110 hurdles and Josh
White in the pole vault. In addition,
the 1,600 relay team of
Ryan Huggins, Will Tirrell,
Sorin and Brian Reis was also
victorious.
Croft, also a junior, took
more than one second off his
previous best time in winning
the 100 hurdles, and was one
of 12 Cooperstown athletes to
turn in personal best performances.
"Croft had the most improvement
of anyone," Howard
said.
Junior Terrell Silvera finished
second in the discus,
throwing more than nine feet
better than his previous best.
Cooperstown won its first
C-1 title ever last season, and
has won the last six Center
State Conference titles in a
row under Howard, who has
been the varsity head coach
since 1972.
"It has to end sometime,
and I feel good about stepping
away with the program in good
shape and a good group of juniors
coming back," Howard
said. "I really love these seniors
and they're a good class
to go out with."
Cooperstown athletic director
Mike Cring said the job
boys cross country job would
be posted in November, and a
successor would probably be
named around January of next
year.
