Round 4: CV-S and Edmeston to meet for title again

By ERIC AHLQVIST

Although an undefeated Tri-Valley season was not in the cards for the Cherry Valley-Springfield baseball team, head coach Ed Dubben still has an ace up his sleeve for Monday’s Tri-Valley Championship Game.

Edmeston handed the Patriots their first league loss of the season Monday with an 8-2 victory, which included a no-hitter for Panthers’ starting pitcher Jordan Williams. The same two teams will meet again at 5 p.m. Monday in the T-V title game at Oneonta State.

CV-S defeated Edmeston in last year’s title game for their first ever championship, while Edmeston defeated CV-S the two previous seasons. Dubben saved the ace of his pitching staff, Steve Herringshaw, for the title game rather than use him Monday against Edmeston.

``That’s how we’ve done it the past couple of years and it’s worked out,’’ Dubben said. ``I expect it to be a much different game on Monday.’’

Herringshaw has been dominant on the mound this season, striking out 56 batter in 20 innings pitched while allowing just one hit and accumulating a 4-1 record. His loss came to Richfield Springs in a game the Patriots committed seven errors, the same number they had Monday against Edmeston.

``When we’ve made errors this season, we’ve made them in bunches, so I guess it depends which teams shows up for the rest of the season,’’ Dubben said. ``I know we have the talent to compete against Edmeston and maybe this was a good reality check for us.’’

The Patriots clinched their fourth straight Tri-Valley East title on Tuesday with an 8-5 victory over visiting Morris. Ben Halay picked up his fourth win of the season without a loss, pitching a complete game, striking out seven and also contributing a two-run double.

Edmeston, the T-V West champs, finished the season 13-0 overall and 10-0 in league play and also saved their number one pitcher, southpaw Matt Laymon, for Monday’s title game.

Edmeston’s Williams may have set the tone for Monday’s game on the very first pitch, when he plunked CV-S leadoff man Jeremy Hoag in the head. He struck out 10 in the game and improved to 4-0.

``I thought we had a couple of hits that they must have scored as errors but it doesn’t matter because he pitched a great game and the score is the same,’’ Dubben said.

Edmeston played four second inning runs on just one hit, as CV-S starting pitcher Adam Halay hit two batters and made an error that led to two more.

``He’s going to be our number one starter next year and I wanted to put him in a big game and give him some experience,’’ Dubben said. ``He was nervous, but they didn’t hit him hard at all. It’s experience that will help him next year.’’
